Irregular-shaped yard makeover (before and now)
Comments (7)Thanks Rhodium, I really do like being surrounded by giant, fleshy succulents. It's a big change from the plants i've been using up to now. Hostas, roses, daylilies, hydrangea, cannas...they are all really nice, but they die back in our winter and i'm left looking at bare twigs and a sea of mulch. The area has been evolving little by little as I realized that I was using the wrong plants for my climate zone, and as I hosted friends and family for barbecues and smores nights. This area is kind of like the "entertainment room". Holleygarden, I do hope my yard looks like that photoshopped picture within five years or less! haha. And thanks for the compliments on the doggies! They don't like to hang out much on this side of the yard because their doghouse, food and water are all on the north side of the house where they get shade from the house. I do however think the stepping stone suggestion is a great idea. Now...it's just a matter of waiting for our heat to pass so I can go and work outside. (it's currently 112F outside!) Also, the strip of lawn adjacent to the covered patio and beyond is still there. That part of the yard is shaded until about noon, and other parts nearly all day because of a locust tree....See MorePics of the patio stonework (pic heavy)
Comments (20)The steps, retaining walls, and bed edging are Rosetta cultured stone. I don't remember if the flooring is traditional flagstone or cultured stone. I was starting over from scratch, so I had a choice of pretty much any style stone/brick/paver I wanted as long as it was appropriate for use as a retaining wall (some stuff isn't...who knew). I wanted a natural feel to the area, brick/paver stones seemed too formal, plus that's done to death around here - blah - but other stones (boulders) seemed too informal for my house. The Rosetta was actually was the landscaper's suggestion along with some sort of ledgerock (I don't remember exactly what it was), when I went to the supply places this was the winner. I chose the flagstone because, again, I didn't want a formal feel, it seemed a perfect choice, especially after I saw it in the display areas of the stone place with the Rosetta stone. Comments (27)This is lovely. Keep rambling! I love to hear about other's garden adventures. I also do not know any other gardeners locally, although I do get to talk to my sister on the phone about our respective gardens. Your path is really beautiful and co-ordinates well with the fencing. Plus, all the plants look so healthy. The neighbors maple is a nice addition too. The only thing I can think of is trying for a kid's garden in the center plot. A bean teepee and some towering sunflowers or maybe a 3 sisters corn/bean/squash mound just to model interesting plant interactions. Although it looks as though you may have already filled it up with some goodies since there are plants in the pic....See MoreBack patio makeover....before and after pics
Comments (5)I thought I posted on this earlier today. Maybe that was when my DH removed the toilet from the master bath and walked past me with it. I got distracted. Patio is really looking good. I love your concrete. We replaced deck with pavers and I can't tell you how much happier we are. Please keep posting shots as you get things done, it looks really pretty. Red...See Moretheclose
