Meiwa on own roots?
Comments (4)They are naturally dwarfs. My Meiwa is grafted to Kuharsky Citrange. The tree grows about 8 inches per year and the fruit is quite taste. Unless you plan to flood it with bright light from October till may growing from seed is a waste of time. I have 5 Meiwa seedlings growing slower than any other citrus seedling. It may take 5 years to get fruit. 6b Steve...See MoreLooking for Seedless Meiwa Kumquat
Comments (19)You were lucky to be able to taste test. And you found 2 different kumquats at the same nursery, in Feb?? (would love to know the name of the nursery) The few meiwas I have had are from 2 different trees. They are not as juicy as nagami (altho I got several batches of nagami from the grocery that had no juice), and just didn't seem as enjoyable. Meiwa is called sweet because it has less of the tart juice. Fruit quality should increase with the age of the plant. Also bear in mind you ate one fruit that may/not have been perfectly ripe. Again, if you want seedless, your only choice is nordmann nagami. Mine had a lovely afternoon basking on the deck today, since it was warm. Got a shower, too. Hope it wasn't too sunny....See MoreApproach grafting

Related to this is thread grafting where a thinner younger plant is threaded through the trunk (a hole is drilled first - of course) which is bigger and fatter. Eventually the bottom is cut off leaving a branch in a desired spot. This is difficult since you have to cut off the leaves and have ensure the apical meristem is undamaged when threading....See MoreDoes Mandarinquat grow true from seed?
Comments (9)Dave, 3 years ago when I got my mandarinquat tree, I read up on them a lot, and I did find website that said they came true from seed. I can't recall now which website it was, but after reading that I started a couple from seeds. My 2 seedlings did look mandarinquaty, before they died just this last December. I like the taste too....See Moresunshine (zone 6a, Ontario,Canada)
