Small family room area rug

In our new house we have a relatively small family room, into which the front door opens (left of the yellow chair). As you can see in the pic, we have grey carpet in the room. We had an 8x10 area rug here, but it was too big and stuck out way too far into the room, even when pushed against the blue wall. We want a coffee table in the room, but do we need an area rug? If so, is it OK to go with a much smaller one, one that might only go under the coffee table? With the front door immediately to the left of the yellow chair, and the hallway to the garage just barely off camera on the right-hand side of the pic, a large rug creates odd walking spaces (and we were tired of people taking their dirty shoes on and off while standing on the area rug). Help! Oh, and we have to finish hanging our artwork, get new end tables...and the list goes on.

Very pretty room. I would forego the area rug altogether and keep the sleek look. I might double up on the curtains for a more luxurious look, find a great MCM coffee table, and a wonderful yellow glass piece, and call it done.

After we removed the too-big area rug, we really considered not having one at all. I think because of the somewhat odd entry/family room function of this comfortable-but-not-big space it created strange visual and walking spaces in the room. Our house is flipped, so the main living areas (kitchen, dining, office, living room, bedrooms) are all upstairs.

Thanks everyone! The mirror is actually done in a green color with some decorative painting on it in a sort of botanical design. I was *thinking* about painting the outside edges of the mirror black, the front flat part the red in the room and then having some of those vinyl "wall words" done in a custom fashion to go around the frame of the mirror in black. I was thinking "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Deeply" in a script font. What do you think? I love the rug but just wish it was a bit bigger. It is a 9X12 and my furniture doesn't fit all the way on it. I switched the furniture to an L-shape and the back legs of the chair and sofa are off of the rug. I don't think that this one comes any larger. Hmmmnn... The mantel is really bothering me in brown. Do you guys really think it would be too much black on that wall if I painted it black? Maybe I should paint it back to the trim color. Thanks for any advice!

You have a lovely room, very neutral. I love the idea of a cowhide in the sitting area and something textural, like flokati in the sectional area. Agree to stay away from grey, but any other neutral color would look great. I also like many of your choices, but would probably stay on the lighter side vs dark. Where are windows in the room?

What brand area rugs are best for a busy family room?

Go to a good broadloom store. Not a big box, a dedicated carpet store Select a nylon, or a wool and nylon that works in your space, and have it bound to 11 x 14, or larger if need be. It isn't just about "brand". It is about choice of materials. Antrim, Fabrica, Masland all have lovely broadloom in nylon. You won't find any of them in Home Depot. No matter a selection ? Frequent vacuuming , avoiding BARE feet, taking care of spots and spills asap will help. Pottery Barn wools are tufted, not woven. They will NEVER stop shedding. Luxury wool will shed, but will stop in a bit of time.. Your vacuum matters. NONE of the luxury wool will stand up to Dyson which literally tears up a rug. Many luxury will say "suction only" .....despite they are luxurious.

Consider a hide or flokati just as an accent rug under a new glass and metal coffee table.

I would add a light rug. Maybe even a jute/sisal rug.

I used to have that same color carpet and added a creamy colored rug with a light beige border and it looked great. I added some brightness and texture.

Love your space! I think a coffee table would look perfect in your room as well.

I think it would look much better with a small area rug under a coffee table. Maybe a 5 by 7. Kjoy can you tell me where you found that table, it appears to be what I've been looking for in the past few weeks.
