Oh that is a great idea. Much better to use them.

When I was doing vermicomposting, I loved going around the neighbourhood and picking up their pumpkins. I'd cut them up and freeze them for food for the lads.

1. I just found out that our town recycling place is collecting pumpkins for a local farm&garden that has llamas. Love it!!

I have one small pie pumpkin on my porch. I plan to re purpose it into a pie! Amber always gives hers to her chickens or puts in the compost bin at her house.

I usually let them decompose in a back corner of the yard. Call me weird – I enjoy watching things decompose, composting, vermicomposting. Wonderful idea to transition them to farm animals.

socks, I do that too! They'll be looking super-scary in a few weeks, won't they. I keep thinking that next year we should carve them early.

Take them to your neighborhood wooded area and toss them for the wild animals to eat.

I repurpose them into cooked pumpkin for meals -- added to soups and chili, stews, roasted, mashed with butter. It is a delicious vegetable -- even the ones sold for jack-o-lanterns are (they just aren't as sweet as "pie" pumpkins") -- I really can't fathom why the general public rejects it.

That said, four medium pumpkins are about all I have room in the freezer to store. We have someone in the neighborhood who collects them for a local farmer, and another who entertains "pumpkin bowling" down her backyard slope into the wooded ravine for the deer.

Nickel, yes I love the way they do a slow collapse. It is amazing though here in So. CA they can sit for months and months without rotting unless they get too wet or the skin is broken.

Out driving today, I saw a closed "pumpkin patch" with dozens of lonely pumpkins sitting there. I hope they don't trash them but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens. They are very heavy and wet for trash cans. Seems a terrible waste of energy, water to get them to market.
