What would you do with this kitchen?
Comments (9)Jillius- the living room is 14' x 15'. The dining room includes the original, original kitchen space so it is a bit elongated, but not nearly so long in relation to the living room as I have it drawn! The combined kitchen and dining room would be larger than the living room, but we would be opening up the smaller archway between the two so I think it will look okay. We stretch out our table for large gatherings frequently so we need the space there. The room at the back of the house is our office/laundry/sewing room. The previous owners used it for a type of family room but I don't want it for that. It is awkwardly large for what we are using it for but there isn't much else to do with it. Someday I would like a large craft/laundry table there and some built in cabinetry but for now....It would make a nice sized kitchen, but is too out of the loop. The front bedroom does have a door to the foyer and one to the hall by the bathroom. It doesn't serve much purpose but my daughter loves to have two doors on her room:) Some day we will use it for a guest room. Thanks for your input!...See MoreWhat would you do to this kitchen/dining room?
Comments (4)not sure whether it's the right forum..maybe cross posting in Kitchen would make sense..but for now: a) no to the making island one level because of the sink-will splash. I agree might look better aesthetically but the space probably won't stay bare..will you have bar stools there, for example? will look more considered when not just a piece of drywall as it seems to be now b) what color will be new appliances? what material you want your new countertops to be? do the current ones bother you? any plans for the backsplash? c) love that piece of furniture, makes kitchen more homey, provides storage, space for display. however it's you who should love it, maybe move it and live with empty space for a while..the ideas will follow. you might want to bring it back. or repaint. or make a tiny nook with small table and couple chairs/tabourets-if you see the need in one. or put there something less useful but still pretty-a tree? a grandfather clock? d)..yes,.will look weird..I think. will be interesting to hear what others think. you can install just a hood and think where you can store a microwave so it's not in your face yet you don't need to bother withe island too much. unless you dislike the island in general and decide to tackle it anyway Generally speaking nice space. I'd buy a light I love (unless you love the one that's there)...furnish to my liking and to family's needs..think about whether I want curtains(I'd probably want them..)..and just live, you know. And with time, I'd see what might be more functional..more beautiful..because the more you're in the space the more it informs you, and the more you know what you'd want it to be that's very briefly..if you want serious advice on improvement of layout I highly recommend Kitchens forum....See MoreWhat would you do with this kitchen?

Comments (28)christa, you have a nice space to work with. I'd for sure get a counter depth fridge, AND have them build you an end panel so you don't see the side of your fridge. Since you're painting, it's the perfect time to do it. Basically the side looks like this. But this isn't a counter depth. see how far out it juts? (scroll up and see mine. it's counter depth) pretty easy to make one of these. and you can have the cabinets above attached. or do wine racks or doors, or open boxes. just make sure they come out to the edge so you can reach them This isn't on the end, but I wanted you to see how they built the surround for it And, if you have any room on the side, make another storage spot, or a broom closet as for your microwave, and your lower cabs, find a spot where you can put it. I don't think your island is deep enough for it. since youre redoing things, have some of those lower doors taken out and modified to do large drawers. you can store more in the drawers. All of your lowers are doors w/shelves! Try taking out the ones on the left or the right, and have the kitchen place build you drawers. To find a good company, you'll want a ProCabinet painter who also does carpentry. that's what my guys were. Check Yelp. my company had all 5 star reviews. all of them! And they're right. they weren't cheap, but man were they worth every penny. reliable, came out to fix any scratches, and were fast. make sure when you interview you find out EXACTLY what their finishing process entails. every step, and every product. Have them write it down for you. Then find out what their warranty is. And, important. Are they taking everything back to their shop to spray? They should. not gonna lie,,,it's a mess when they come in to spray the skeletons. but they should completely wall off your space. Find this out ahead of time!...See MoreRelated Professionals
