how do you want to do this work on one area at a time, or start with a mass of choices and then work at narrowing it down? I am thinking you want 3 rugs? one for the desk one for the reclining area and one for the sofa area? how many guests to expect to have and how many nightly? i think i have a couple of rugs for the group area and office area. for the lounge area, I would like you to go to a big box carpet store. they have tons of left overs, prebound dirt cheap. here is the thing, i have had the rug pads, i have had the shag rugs, etc. the most luxurious rugs were ones that had medium length loops and had max loops per sq inch. you can tell by pressing it with the flat of your palm. your hand will be supported by the loops and you never touch the bottom of the rug. it is like floating. here are the samples, remember, let me know if you like them , otherwise i will toss them. you know.

Havingfun, Yes, I think that I would like to start first with the rug, although someone suggested to start with the furniture first. Either way, it will take time for me since I am working on a budget, and I tend to be picky and often take time to ponder my choices. I love the first two rugs, especially the cream one. They are beautiful! I considered an 8X10 rectangular area rug. I thought that multiple rugs might present more a fall risk. Perhaps? What do you think? I have put some samples in my Ideabook.

Shirlpp, You are right. I do not have visitors regularly, but love it when I do. However, I really thought that if I choose what pleases me and makes me comfortable, my guests will feel it too. I want them to feel comfortable enough to kick their shoes off and sit back and relax, even if they wish to sit on the floor. If it ever gets formal, I can always bring out fold-up chairs

First step would be to do a floor plan and I would suggest including a desk and various types of seating. If it were me, I wouldn't be offering fold up chairs to guests...there are lots of inexpensive and comfy chairs and you have the space...just watch for sales or buy second hand. I would definitely hold off on the rug until after you have purchased furniture/decided on placement/defined your color scheme and accessories. Its easy to add and you'll better know the location and size required and even if you need one - spend the money instead on accessories and lighting, art, etc. Having a vision for the room will also make it much easier.

I agree to choose your furniture pieces first and then the rug. Your space is 18x11 and it is really not that spacious for functioning as an office and living room, so offering nice looking folding chairs to guests is not an issue IMO.

well I usually like to work with the couch first then the rug, then you do everything else with the colors in the rug. In this case, we already know our colors. Here are a few ideas for a couch. personally i do not think the room is too small. We just have to be more careful.Now if you truly do not have a lot visitors, based on how the room works this is down filled and has got to be like a dream.

everdebz, thank you for sharing, however these area rugs are too busy and dark for the look I have in mind. My carpeting is a mocha color. I am looking for something solid in cream or very, very light gray. My colors will come with the wall art and/or accessories. Spent several years with dark decor, now I want Light.

Dear Steve: Thank you for sharing your advice and artwork. It is interesting that one of the pieces I am intending to use is a photo of my son and daughter-n-law's wedding. Your first print reminds me of it. I also have some fashion sketches of my own that I intend to use and some beautiful photographs taken by a special classmate. Thank you to all of you for your comments and advice. I am moving slow for several reasons, one is my budget, the other is trying to decorate while in the midst of a family crisis. Can't wait though to finally settle in and enjoy my "decorating dream."

I have rules regarding expenses, so unless it something i got special for someone I tend to be very reasonable - like all pillows for $25 or less. If you find something you like and it is too steep, as it is so often. give me a reference site and the pic and i might be able to get it or similar for less.
