Unconventional deck location and door - smaller pantry?
Comments (7)Rhome -- I see what you mean by the pocket door on the pantry. I wonder if moving it to the other side would give it the room it needs? My freezer will fit in the cleaning closet in my mudroom, which is just off the kitchen. My freezer is 3' 5" by 2 1/2 (including wall clearance behind) and that closet is 3 1/2 by 5 and intended for vacuum, brooms, and some shelving for cleaning products and bulk paper products. The freezer would be a little tighter squeeze there but would work and location would be fine. I am comfortable with waiting until some framing is up until I would make the final decision about where it would go. Rosie -- I got the idea about moving the deck from my friends house. She built a ranch with beautiful views and a similar kitchen/family/dining layout. She moved her deck to the corner of the house and it makes all the difference for lighting and views! I loved the way it felt! Especially since ours is covered, lighting would really be restricted. And regarding moving the entrance to the deck... I've always had a deck door in my main eating area (never use formal dining rooms) and I just don't like it. I'd rather it seem more like a room than a room + entrance to the deck. I know lots of people like the patio door from a breakfast area, but I'd rather not if I can help it....See MoreQuestions on Kitchen Layout -- Pantry -- Island -- Etc...
Comments (20)I think you should quit worrying so much about screening your work spaces from view. A kitchen is a work space. People expect to see work and the tools and other items needed to perform that work there. If you do a deep, single sink, any dirty dishes waiting for the DW can fit in it and be hidden without cluttering your counters. If you have hand-washed some dishes, they can drip dry in the rack in the sink still hidden from view. However, if you nix the prep sink in the island and just do the one sink, this won't work as well as you might need to do prep work while dishes are waiting in the sink and, thus, you have now created a wee bit of chaos needing to move dirty dishes onto the counter in order to prep. Also, while your kitchen isn't huge, it is still a bit of a trek to the sink on the perimeter from the fridge. More steps means less efficiency. If it was my kitchen, I'd want the prep sink on the island but might sometimes use the space between the range and main sink for secondary prep. Best of both worlds, imho....See Morepantry layout advance needed
Comments (22)We will definitely have a prep sink in the island. I just couldn't figure out how to add it on the software. Does anyone know how to add it with the NKBA software? In regards to the island location, our current kitchen has it as going from left to right and we have no problems with isle width. It is generally 42 inches. We did consider moving the island as you have drawn it but it would interfere with the table in the breakfast room. For resale value we decided to keep the space for the table. Changing it to a peninsula with seating will interfere with the sliding door on the left (which isn't drawn). It is the only access to the back yard which is used all the time for the dogs. Also we go back and forth on the dishwasher location. If we move it to the left side of the clean up sink then that blocks access to the sink from the table. Usually I like to have the family help with clean up and blocking access may be an issue. Location of the dishwasher is still under consideration. The issue we are currently debating is whether or not to have a built in pantry. My husband wants it gone. I want it for storage of large items (like dog food, costco paper towels, and those small bag of chips for the kids lunches. I don't think we can easily fit those in pull out pantries. My kitchen is my old house was tiny with no storage. I moved to the current home 10 years ago and just loved all the storage I have. Not surprising after 10 years we have filled every space and could use more. My husband is a gadget lover. I appreciate everyone's comments regardless if it about the pantry or not. Every comment has me thinking of what I can do to improve...See MoreNew Home Construction Kitchen Layout (to Pantry or not to pantry)
Comments (22)this is the only "major" change we want to make (*aka move cabinets around.) We are happy with the builder just want to redesign the kitchen. Originally we were fine with the pantry but want to maximize our budget aka look at alternatives (aka if we can make the change great if not we are not crazy worried .) And ty for everyones points its beyond helpful. we can't find anything even close in our market for this amount. (been looking for a long time now) plus we love the lot and the neighborhood (small city)...See MoreArchitectrunnerguy
