New England Rain affecting Hummer Sightings?
Comments (9)I got my rain guard. I have been using it for a while. It definitely seems the hummers have no problem visiting the feeder now. I did open my patio umbrella over the feeder for a temporary fix. It helped too, although I think the hummingbirds were just arriving still. Which accounted for me not seeing them often. It seemed as though I had a few visit the feeder just in passing. I now have one male hogging my the feeder. I've seen him chase away others at the feeder. He seems to be very shy of me and my family being outside. I would love to get a good picture of him, but I can't even be standing outside, when he's there, or he flies off! I did get a close up look, at a less timid female. I was standing about a foot away from the feeder at eye level. Very Cool! I found a rain guard that I fell in love with, it looks like an umbrella and it's red to help attract the hummers. I'll put a link to an online resource, I found. Look under hummingbird feeder accessories. It was hard to find the red one. It's made by PAR*A*SOL. If you check out their website they have a lot of good looking hummingbird feeders and great accessories to boot! Some girls accessorize their wardrobe, I prefer to accessorize my garden LOL. Here is a link that might be useful: PARASOL Red Rain Guard...See Moredoes heavy rain affect milky sore?
Comments (7)I would think most of it is probably washed away. Keep in mind the whole purpose is for the spores to colonate the area. The little bit left behind will likely do so but just take a lot longer for it to become effective. Probably not a bad idea to reapply after things dry out again. Look at the bright side of it though. The milky spores are wide spread now!! I think it takes a couple years for it to really be effective so time wise no great loss. But I do understand the monetary loss and these days we need to save as much as we can....See MoreHas the price of gasoline affected how much you drive?
Comments (15)Well, I never drove at all before June because I did not have a license! Then having found the ability to go wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted for the first time in 40 years, I was not about to let the price of gas stop me from going where I wanted! On the other hand, instead of shopping at the Jewel or Meijer that are close to my house, I can take off early Sunday mornings and run to Angelo Caputo's or Garden Fresh Market while my husband is still asleep so I have saved way more money on groceries than I spent on gas. Lunch meat alone is less than half the price of Jewel at these stores, and fruits and veggies are extremely cheap. I just picked up yellow and orange peppers for 49 cents a lb, red peppers for 59 cents a lb, and onions for 33 cents a lb. I slice or chop them and freeze them in vacuum bags to use as needed. The savings are incredible. It is an extra 10 mile round trip to these stores, but since I get over 20 mpg with my Honda C-RV, That's only $2 in gas when it was at $4 a gallon. I saved $30 on my grocery bill last week, well worth $2 in gas! I was complaining to my husband this morning that I thought my gas mileage had gone down since it cooled off so when I filled my tank I asked him to figure the gas mileage for me (we use on of our trip monitors in the car to track how far we go on each fill up) and I got 21.5 mpg on this tank. Not bad for a small SUV and the fill up only cost $23 dollars today gas was down so much! Yeah! I do put on 24 miles 2 or 3 times a week for a round trip to hike at the Morton Arboretum (my hubby got me a membership for sweetest day) but I figure that is cheaper than joining a gym! (and my hubby figures it's cheaper than if I go to the mall, hahaha!) I've had the pass for two weeks now and lost two lbs already! Yeah!!!! Joanne...See MoreHow does heat/humidity affect you?
Comments (58)I have lived in most states in western USA. Can't say humidity was a THING I noticed until living in MN. I am going to chalk that up to being a child and children just manage? Even in New Mexico I don't remember the heat being a thing. We did the Disney thing in Florida a few years ago. It was October. We were there when the humidity broke for the season. Oppressive and restrictive is all I can say. Everyone crabs about northern winters but as we say you can always put on more clothes--you can only get sooo naked. I will second the bright sun of winter. Often it comes with very frigid days but it is winter, after all. We are having a rather glorious summer. Some humidity true but a week on, some relief then it returns allows for plenty of gardening and outdoor time. I think that is the key, change. Non stop heat/cold/humidity--what ever--is exhausting. I prefer the hit of extremes to the non stop torture of day after day after day--that's what gets me down. The idea of summer in the southern states holds nothing appealing. Maybe a new thread is needed. Where would be the perfect, climate wise, place to live? Four seasons, nothing EXTREME........See MoreNHBabs z4b-5a NH
