Bathroom wall color, grey tile

HELP!! My bathroom has grey tile on the walls. It's a medium grey with a blue tint. For YEARS I had wallpaper which was basically just bright white with red, grey and black splashes of color. Wallpaper is dated, not to mention pealing, needed to come down. I sent photo to a decorator friend who told me to paint the walls white! I agree that would be the easist solution, and trendy but my husband hates the idea. So, I picked a pale grey, thinking I would be splitting the difference... almost white but a hint of color. First try was BM Whitestone. Painter called me as he put up a few strokes... it was purple next to the tile, HORRIBLE! So then I picked SW First Star. It is so pale it's boring. It's the grey tile that is throwing me. Here's a pic before wallpaper removed. We plan to frame the mirror (white wood). We're now thinking of going with BM Hamilton Blue, but I'm afraid it will look odd next to the tile, HELP!! I know the red in the wall[paper would work, but I don't want to do red.

The countertop is more gray with cream and I agree that just white isn’t going to do much if it’s not the right shade of white - yes there are tons of white paint shades out there. If you took down the gray tile and painted you could do blue or not, but if you removed that black and white tile stuff you’d be a lot better off in terms of possibilities.

Yes, I selected this tile back in '93, ha. Wish I'd gone with either white painted beadboard or white tile with a tiny black strip of black as an accent (that's period for this house). But, I'm stuck with my bad choice from back then, not repainting the tile or taking it down, that's not in the budget. Eventually I will get rid of it and change the counter top but need to live with it for a few years. BM person at store recomended BM Lucerne rather than BM Hamilton Blue. It will be very different in there for sure! But, first coat is up and it looks good. My "I like my whole house to be practically white" friends will be horrified, but my husband wanted a color and by golly, we will have color now!

I am redoing our bathroom and the first set of photos show our work. Though if you scroll down the post you will see the first bathroom we did. It is grey brown, the floor is slate and the shower base is granite. So the walls play lightly with those colors. I would add a photo in this message, but I cannot figure out how to do that. Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

Thanks priairiemom. I picked up a sample of the Repose Gray & am anxious to try it on the walls. It is a very pretty color! Oh Wow! Thanks Tibbs! It's great to see a mockup. Wish I was that talented. It has me quite torn. But I'll start with trying the light shade first. Thank you to everyone for suggestions! :) I think maybe I should loose the valance? I looked at Lowes tonight to see if they carried the Delta champagne gold color so I could see if it could work with the polished brass on the shower door handles but they didn't have it (: Is there any other finishes you think could work with the polished brass?

It is difficult to perceive true colors on a computer monitor - so you ill need to make the final choice. Here are some basket weave floors. There a several companies that make it and in some different color tone variations, so be sure that the wall tile and floor are working well together. You might want to get a sample of the SW Sea Salt and paint a large piece of foam board to set your samples on and look at it in different lighting. The Sea Salt can change colors in different lighting. I think you are thinking of the white ice up the walls, like a wainscot: I have mosaic tile floors, though not the basket weave as it wasn't out when I did mine, and white subway tile walls in two of my bathrooms and plan to do the same in my master someday. They remain more timeless looking than my master, done in early 2000's. I did a decorative trim in one bathroom, and a simple bullnose in the other. I wish I had not done the decorative trim piece, tough it is a bit more ornate than what you are considering.

I hear you, the countertops in my last kitchen were the same white square tiles I bought it with in 2002 and I left it up to the buyer what they wanted to do with it when we moved across the country to our new home. The things I wanted to do here were more important than updating the old one entirely - they did get a year old so newish floors, carpet, blinds and paint as well as a new fridge and microwave that stayed which we bought to replace the ones that up and died about 6 months before we moved.

The mister left the particulars of how to decorate and what order to do things up to me except for the counters - his reasoning was that if we were doing granite then get it out of the way so we aren’t in total disarray longer than absolutely needed. He also thought the couch would take longer to come in because it was a special order fabric choice I had to have. I’m a fan of blue, the more vibrant the better, it helps make my grays in the house work - my brother said I was approaching “looks like a jail” with all the gray but who asked him anyway. ;)
