The remedy is to tell the contractor to fix or replace. So sorry!

I'd try what Sophie said. If that doesn't do it, then you do what rebunky said.

Are they scratches into the ceramic or are they just marks from the steel? Ceramic is used to sharpen knives, so it removes steel, not the other way around. That means those are just marks that can be removed. Soft scrub or Barkeeper's Friend should work. BKF has oxalic acid to remove the metal in the ceramic. Comet would work, but I never use Comet in ceramic sinks anymore. The harshest thing I use is plastic scrubbers on the back of a sponge. Once you get the metal marks off, then wash the sink with plain dish soap, rinse it well, and dry it. Then use a flashlight to determine if the finish on the ceramic is damaged. If it is, then call the painter back.

Maybe just consider my kitchen officially broken in. I wouldn't give up yet! I understand cleaning paint brushes with a wire brush - I do that, but not in your kitchen sink! Utility sink perhaps, or outside at a water hose is far the preferred method, especially since it was not you doing it.

I do think you should call a professional resurfacer, get a price, have them explain the details of the procedure, and tell the contractor who you want to have it fixed unless he has a pro do it. You scratching it versus someone who doesn't own it are two different things. Also, we're getting a couple Whitehaven's, as well as the sink grids, and I intend to buy some of those suction mats for the sides for when we clean our cast iron items (I use cast iron frequently).

I have had my Whitehaven 18 months and no scratches like that. I have one I can feel but not see from dropping a heavy skillet - then I got the grids for the bottom. A sink that is scratched through the enamel by a painter has been seriously compromised and should be replaced.

However, it is really hard to go through the enamel to the cast iron. I would try the soft scrub first - then Bar Keeper's Friend because it is more likely they are metal marks and not scratches. But again, if you can feel the indents (he must have done some fierce scrubbing) definitely have them replace the sink. You should not have that kind of "wear" for years - and not even then if you use the grids.

The enamel on the cast iron is a harder surface than the steel in the wire brush. Clean it with the soft scrub and reevaluate.

Agree with Sophie I have had two Kohler white cast iron sinks and a little soft scrub w bleach and they will be fine.

I am aware of the trade-offs in material choices. Like Silegranite, when this stuff is severely scratched, it's ruined.

If it is truly damaged you shouldn't have to live with it. Hopefully your sub has liability insurance.
