Help! Need inexpensive curtain ideas
Comments (19)I was going to say sheets too. I have used them MANY times when I've needed something to go on the window but was pretty much broke - twin flat sheets (which are 66" wide, full enough for a 47" window) can be super-ultra-cheap in the clearance bins, and great prints and colors abound. I've even seen sheets still in their original packaging at Goodwill and Salvation Army for just a couple of dollars apiece. Just run the rod through the top hem, tie back to one side, and tah-daaah, instant curtains! If you want two panels per window for a more traditional look, get one full or queen sheet per window and split it down the middle, hemming the raw edges. Since you sew, hemming them up would be easy (I strongly dislike puddled WTs, it always looks to me like [extra polite mode on] someone didn't get around to hemming their WT's to the right length!), but I always just used the iron-on hemming tape because me and sewing are a bad combination. LOL Tied back to one side on a cup hook (and they can be tied back with any number of things; I often used scarves I liked but didn't wear), they can be "released" at night to completely cover the window, although I'd try cleaning those blinds too and using the fabric WT to pretty-up the vinyl blinds (or distract the eye from them until you can afford to replace them LOL). Scrungy vinyl blinds can be cleaned in the bathtub. Low-thread-count sheets - and I'm talking down in the 150 range, the really cheap ones that feel like sandpaper to sleep on - can look surprisingly like linen especially when you use white, and that's what I've usually used. Starch them lightly when you iron them for an extra-crisp look. A random thought though - does MIL have anything she could bring along? My grandmother lived with my mother for a few years and brought along many things from her old house to decorate her room in Mama's house. It made her more comfortable to have her own things around her, and less like she was living in "someone else's house". (She eventually got her own teensy little apartment in an in-town elder housing complex - her old house had been way out in the boonies, as is Mama's - and is happy as a clam at high tide to have her own place again.)...See MoreInexpensive kitchen update
Comments (22)(cpartist that's not to suggest your updates weren't amazingly and cleverly done. i don't know your then-kitchen, but i know-to some degree-you lol. you're cpartist. not everyone is. i find that many people would do a huge favor to future buyers by not attempting for-resale upgrades) The problem is you and I are happy doing updates ourselves and like me, you probably prefer to do your own. I know I'd rather walk into a total gut job, get it for a good price and do exactly what I want to do, vs someone else's idea of a good kitchen. However that's me. Too many people can't see past what is in front of them. My DH is one of those. If it doesn't look right to him, he can't figure out how to make it right. I didn't change the layout of the kitchen at all and I didn't over improve by putting granite on top of very old cabinets. However the old paint job was chipping and it looked dirty after 16 years of use. The floors were the original yellow linoleum from the 50's. The counters were beige laminate from the 70's. There are times it pays to freshen up and this was one of those times. Same reason I repainted all the rooms in the house and refreshened the bathrooms. A couple of thousand probably saved me tens of thousands in someone wanting to lower the price. And yes I agree about the huge favor because in so many cases people with no sense of design will do something because they think its the thing to do. Then they wind up with something worse looking....See MoreInexpensive kitchen update ideas would be appreciated
Comments (6)Change the receptacle and cover plate on the cabinet end to something that blends in better. Larger pendants. New hardware. No paint on the cabinets. White or light aqua color paint. No beige or grey. Fridge surround down the road when you replace the refrigerator. Since you have limited counter space, I would replace the range hood with a microwave/ hood combination. Not ideal but it would free up a lot of counter. New counter tops. I would try to eliminate the raised ledge and have a wider, one level counter on the sink peninsula. Edited to add that I would put some dimmable LED tape lights on top of the cabinets, too. In addition to the under cabinet lights you've already installed....See MoreHELP, need opinions on updating my living room, inexpensively!
Comments (60)Very nice. I'm glad you went w/ your original layout. :) Love the floor lamps; I think I like first one the best for your space, but they are both nice, and they both work. Love the goat! So much fun. You could mix in a couple of velvets in your pillows, with whichever way you decide to go, neutral or color. Velvet works well with leather. And you could still do neutral in pillows, etc., even with colorful art if you want to. You don't have to necessarily pull colors from art for other decor, art can stand on its own. But you could also incorporate art colors if you would like to, of course. Your space is really looking great. Love your ideas and the direction you're going in. Below, a bit of Boho/Boho Chic. Above, some velvets....See MoreRelated Professionals
