Here is what I found on one website; hope it helps you. The general rule for the height of a pendant light is between 30' to 40' above the surface of the peninsula or island. However, kitchen islands and peninsulas are highly interactive areas where family and guests will gather. You'll have to consider the heights of people in your household and their interactions with others who are across from them at your kitchen peninsula or island

My peninsula is staying the same size. I'll be removing approx. 15 sq. ft. of solid visual blockage above it, so I can't imagine the pendants will be perceived as in the way. I agree with jillandmatt that they'll be a bit like a cute pair of earrings, an accessory that adds light to the peninsula. suzannesl, my peninsula is just 5 ft. long, so it may be that two pendants will suffice. I just have a desire for three, but if three is one too many, I'll go with two. I'm considering one of these shapes (not sure of glass color). Possibly hanging from a rail.

Thanks Romy -- Almost exact - mine is 39 x 75. I'm going to add two recessed lights over the island and just do the 3 pendants along the peninsula. I'll probably change out the other hanging fixture in our seating area. Maybe to a pretty flush mount of some sort. Good thing is, I don't have to choose anything right away. He can just install the boxes and I can take my time.
