Paint Design Dilemma Kitchens

Paint or replace? Any ideas on the cabinets?

We just bought a beach house but we're not wild about the cabinets. I'm fine with the granite but trying to decide if I should paint or replace the cabinets. I got a quote on the paint (walls and cabinets) this weekend but thinking if we're going to go through that whole process maybe we should replace. Any ideas? I was thinking a light gray for the cabinets and change the hardware with a really light gray paint, almost white with touch of gray on the walls. We don't want to do white cabinets. We haven't moved in yet, so this is the perfect time to do it. Thoughts? Thank you for your help!

'let it ride'. let it go a year and then decide if you like the layout, like the house, like the neighborhood. don't spend a penny on anything but beach towels and sunscreen for a year.

i pretty much guarantee you'll choose to do different things if you wait.

I dont care for this wood color on cabinets at a beach house, unless its something to this liking. Is this a vacation or full time house?

my preference.

With that being said, If you replace the cabinets with new you will have to get new counters and backsplash while you at it. Be sure to donate the old cabinets if you can and do go that route.

If you decide to paint I would do a gray to not go against the current counters.

The cabinets aren't my favorite wood, but to me, the issue is the countertop/backsplash. The two together looks very dated. With a nice simple white quartz countertop and a new backsplash, I think the kitchen would look so much nicer.

If you want to change it though, just know painted cabinets never last long. if you're staying in the home for awhile definitely consider just replacing.

Does this help? The post has to stay (load bearing- plus has all sorts of wiring). The light switch for kitchen and dining room are on the hidden side of the pony wall and according to DH can't be moved. I'm afraid any additional wall would become a crumb catcher for the curve edge on the counter... No clue on the tile I want yet for backsplash- everything I've seen I like is $$$, so I'm not really wanting to add more wall. I've gone so far over the insurance already- sort of moved into the whole house needing updating realm (new carpet in all bedrooms, redoing office back to bedroom, new furniture- ended up getting a new dw- idoits who did the water restoration broke my old Miele and refuse to pay- offered a whole $90. The service call alone is $150. I'll deal with them later) Since I have no idea how to post more than one photo at a time, I'll add a close up of the corner in my next post.

I'm trying to wrap my head around what would cause the paint crack like that. It's obvious it is failing. We know that much. But why so soon? I have painted cabinets down in my dank basement that haven't seen new paint since decades before lead paint was banned. Yes the old lead oil paint is better. A thought: The cabinets were painted in relatively warm moist environment. Then shipped in freezing dry weather. The wood rapidly shrunk. Installed in your house. Temperature and humidity rapidly go up and paint begins to crack. But there is no way this could happen in a span of 6 months. Is the paint alkyd or acrylic? I think the paint is some sort of a two component mix. One of the components was not mixed correctly and the paint never cured properly, hence why is has failed.

Hi Dyan- Anything three dimensional would definitely enhance the room, that's a great idea. Just please, not a clock. That only makes your guests feel rushed. And no trite sayings, either, please. Metal would be fine, but something from wood would be good too. You can do a search for "wood wall art" or "3D wood wall art" or "wood wall sculpture" on eBay or etsy or in your local galleries. A local gallery may seem expensive, but when you think what you would have to pay for shipping, the price may be the same.

The old refrigerator appears to be at the end of a run of cabinets (based on the photo which shows the back of chair at the far left). Maybe the thing to do would be to remove the old refrigerator and all the cabinetry to the left of the drawers and wall cabinets. Fix any mess left by the cabinetry removal, and then put a 36" -- and far less-expensive -- free-standing refrigerator in the now empty space where the old refrigerator once stood.

Painted cabinets do last long if they are properly prepped for paint. Unfortunately many DIY projects are poorly prepped and poorly painted with the wrong products.

I would opt for new cabinets due to the kitchen layout. I don't like cook tops in islands. Your at the sink prepping and you have to walk around a wall to cook. I would make it all counter to the left of the fridge and put the cook top over there. I would put double ovens on the little wall. To the right of the fridge I would put the beverage center. That way the island can also act as a bar. In the place of the beverage center I would put pantry.

It all depends upon how much money you want to spend on this & whether or not it’s your full time home. Personally, I’m not crazy about the countertops but if you like them great. I agree with Brushworks, I had my kitchen cabinets professionally painted by a woodwork company 13 years ago ( white ) & they still look great . I’d defer a decision for a year or two.

New cabinets and possibly layout. You will be much happier at the end to have your own customize space that works for you. The kitchen also looks a bit out dated.

Thank you, everyone, for your great advice! Still haven't decided but I definitely need to at least paint the walls right now- I can't do yellow :) But thank you so much for your help!

yes, wall painting doesnt count in my 'wait a year' advice! i had to let our mauve bedroom with sage wallpaper go right away!

If you are timesharing or B&B ing your beach house, I would leave the current kitchen as is because it will be easier to maintain and no one will notice it after the 1st 5 minutes of their stay.. If it's your own home, I would consider replacing the uppers first and then see how you like it ( like the 1st photo posted above)
