Arched (radius) to rectangular windows replacement - brick bungalow
Comments (17)I think you are on the right track. A large portico built in front of the front door would help immensely. It would help get rid of the flatness in the front of the house, it wouldn't block the light to the basement windows and it would add more prominence and stature to the front. Your house would benefit from the addition of large portico with a gable roof, which would blend well with the current windows, structure and the hipped roof on the house. See the 2 photos below. I would refrain from removing the brick around the window and from removing the arched windows since it will cost far in excess of the benefits of changing them out. I would recommend a paint job on the body of the house. Please don't paint the brick. If you decide to keep the brickwork around the arched windows, please consider toning down the paint job on the body of the house. The current paint color is too 'antiseptic' or stark looking. The body needs to be toned down and subtle-earth tone to take the bite out of the harsh contrast between the house body and the brickwork....See MoreMotorized shades and color to high arched & low rectangular windows
Comments (18)Lynartist, let me throw another lifestyle issue into the mix. We have two cats that will certainly get hair on the bottom of the curtains, but I can begrudgingly clean those regularly. The bigger fear is that one decides to climb and snags or tears the material. I can only be present with the water spray bottle/cat training tool for so many hours of the day. I do like your idea of treating the area as a whole rather than parsing out separate window ideas. I've been using this site and post to begin learning about options, vocabulary, concepts for these windows. Your advice, and that of others, is greatly appreciated. Now that I am somewhat armed with a starter set of ideas I'll reach out to a professional in the area, but am still interested in getting more ideas. I always content that it is good to be part of a team. Cheers....See MoreArched radius window leaking
Comments (43)I owe my colleague Charles Ross Homes an apology. He did not know I have not owned a TV for more than 30 years and do not watch television. I never watched Columbo and did not make that connection. I took his comment wrong, and all the blame lies on me. Please accept my apology and continue your valuable comments on all these threads, and our attempts at humor. I am truly sorry. If it is okay with you I will leave my comment to show how how stupid some people (me) can be, or I think I can delete it. Comments (29)But the zoning in our area actually requires that any front porch must be at least 50% of the house width. Zoning typically regulates the type of building that may be built, like single family residential, or apartments, or an office building. Do the rules also dictate the stone? In any case, I agree with Hallett that the design needs to be unified. As is, only the front elevation is remotely colonial, nothing on the inside or the other elevations seems to match up. I would consider the porch full width with a lower pitched roof, and the columns should support a visible beam. The columns could also be larger and I'd raise the porch roof up so the tops of the windows (trim) are visible. Also on the windows, remove the apron. Window with apron on right....See Morearmchairshopper
