Windows Design Dilemma Bedroom

Drapes, Blinds or Others for Upstairs Bedrooms?

Hi guys!

We are purchasing a townhouse and for some reason it currently doesn't have any curtains/blinds. What would you guys recommend for the upstairs bedrooms? Curtains? Drapes? Blinds? Shutters? We do want the ability to let a lot of sunlight in, but I also do care about blocking sunlight for bedrooms because I wake up to the first light.

The pictures below are for the three bedrooms. These are pictures taken for the home listing, so all furniture are staged and not necessarily what we'll have eventually.

Decisions like this often depend on the style in which the room is furnished, so it's hard to be sure what would be best. That said, my first instinct is full-length curtains with a rod that extends far enough on both sides to allow for them to be pulled completely open. The windows themselves are handsome so you don't want them permanently hidden.

Too broad a question to be even answered here. Other than skip the dust catching blinds. Go to a local Hunter Douglas dealer near you for privacy and light control option in abundance........ keep them neutral and unified throughout the home. No townhouse "comes with" curtains, unless they were left behind by a previous owner: )

They should be considered after the light control is resolved. .......meaning decorative and not to yank closed. Far easier and fewer $$ and an easier solution all around.

Thank you. The windows are the same size, I do have blinds and solar Shades but it's an upstairs west-facing window and it still gets really hot in the afternoon. No patio door. Can anyone suggest a curtain fabric or a place online where I can buy them? There are also two windows on either side of the bed, the ceiling is a little lower there. Please excuse the mess...

Hi Chelsea, Here are a couple of ideas to refresh the room with just some furnishing and decorating elements: 1. repaint the wall white or cream (will make the space feel bigger and taller). 2. replace the window shade with something a bit cosier/ nicer like roman shades for example. 3. the ceiling fluorescents are really not great, you would have to remove them and put some downlights instead to really make the room feel nicer. If you don't want to spend money changing the ceiling layout you could change the tube to something warmer could help. I would try and avoid using them and rather play with some free-standing floor lamp in the tall corner (opposite to the bed wall) and some nice nightstand or sconces at the bed. 4. replace the doors. Flat panels are rarely flattering unless used in a very modern/ minimal interior, shakers are the easy fix and you can find some affordable ones at home depot. 5. change the doorknobs to something more fun/ special 6. a bed frame or even just a headboard would help your bed feel like the main piece of furniture in the room. If you don't want a footboard, you could end with a bench at the end of the bed. 7. get a comfortable upholstered lounge chair to be next to the floor lamp on the right of the drawer chest 8. add some plants if you are into it Do you have a picture of the wall opposite to the window? I am wondering if there is a way the bed could face them instead of being tucked in the corner and facing the bathroom door. Hope this helps ;) Marina-

It has nothing to do with style as to my"thing" which is nothing more than to give a client THEIR thing, far better in a result than if they went it alone. My thing belongs in my house, not anyone else's. I don't care if it is mid century, the most elegant 1920 Georgian Colonial , a Tudor, the most modest lake cottage, "Condo Fantastico" panoramic views of the ocean, the Gulf, or a three level ski house in Vail. Been there, done them all, to include a lot of g.u.t.. to the studs or from ground up. The client's aesthetic is the goal of any designer. ......unless that designer only wanted to do her own aesthetic, and was sought solely for that reason and her/his very specific signature "look". You have the designer. When you have the right one for you, and I assume you do? It shouldn't be necessary to crowd source opinions, unless early on you're not getting the good vibe feeling, aren't on the same page in the design process. As to finances? Nobody's business but yours, certainly none of mine. With ANY remodel, you do it for you and you alone. You will never be able to predict long term trends, nor the whims/wants of another future buyer. All homes are in the end, worth exactly what someone is willing to pay at the point someone is ready to let it go. Or as Dad used to say? "Don't bet the ranch!"

With baseboard heating I would suggest roman shades. They are supposed to stop at the sill, so won't look odd that length. DH is right, stopping them above the baseboard heating will look strange. There is a lot of variety in roman shades, they don't have to look cold and modern. Hang them as high as you can (based on the window on the far left) so when they're open you get a full window view. I have some pictures saved of living rooms with less modern looking shades. You haven't said what you have chosen for bed linens - start there and don't be afraid to use some pattern in the window treatments if everything else is plain.

I think that blinds and shades are to be used for privacy/light control, etc. If they are needed then I would add sheers or drapery panels with them. I do not like the current trend of shades/blinds standing alone. It looks like the room is not finished.

Your windows are suitable for whatever you choose. You could use decorative rods with grommet top panels. You can even use double rods so that you can have sheers and panels. The great thing is that panels come in countless colors, patterns, fabrics, and prices! You can get those that are blackout. Mount the rods so that they extend past the windows. That enables you to pull them wide open during the day. Panels are so versatile. They can be washable, inexpensive, and simple to change. This is quite unlike blinds and shades that can run thousands of dollars.
