The angle of that last photo definitely shows the true size of the room....thanks for posting it! I like the blinds since they give a lighter, brighter feel. But hey, that's just my opinion. : ) And.........I have to agree with Caminnc's comment about the cushions re: color vs pattern. You have a lot going on with remodeling, so waiting on the window treatment may be wise at this point. Hanging some simple panels on each side of the window, along with the blinds, would change the whole feel of the room, but I understand you wanting to stay with the current WT. I think the white is 'glaring' at you because of all the other dark colors in the area and it appears to be the only white anywhere except for the flower stand. Finish the rest of the tear-out........and the white may grow on you!

Actually what jumped into my head when you showed the bookcase and mentioned the shutter headboard is beadboard-textured paintable wallpaper - waybackwhen, many cabinets, including freestanding ones, had a beadboard back. It's less busy than patterned wallpaper or fabric (remember, it'll get busier when you get books in there, unless you go the covering-with-identical-blank-paper route) but it has more interest than an ordinary painted surface. Remember to paint the shelves the same color so they're not visually intrusive. However, most wallpaper dealers (brick and mortar type) have bins with "orphan" rolls of paper at a VERY steep discount. If you can find the time you might cruise through some stores to see what strikes your fancy.

thanks marti8a. Funny, I was just asking DH how scaffolding on a curved staircase would work....Bec I'd really need to get right up to the top (no paintbrush on a pole for a wallpapering job!) Good points re dust. I find that cat hair clings to a bare wall as it is. On the bright side, the higher up bits of wallpaper wouldn't get damaged by kids' dirty fingers....and toys scraping the walls after being launched down the stairwell. I just can't picture me enjoying a solid colour on that wall, and the painted stripes on my livingroom wall would be fun, but again, hard to do bec of the height of the stairwell (plus, I've already done stripes). I wonder if a couple of large wall paper panels (mounted to plywood or something) would give me the patterns that I want. I can't see running a chair rail and then wall papering below it If you look closely, you can see the large horizontal tone on tone stripes in my LR (and the too small area rug - I'm trying to stop the chairs from sliding down the hallway, while I figure out either a good underpad for the hide rug, or, follow my heart and acquire a silky shag rug - hee hee hee!)
