Rhododendron Brown leaves
Comments (3)Thanks for the winter tip. I will try that this winter. Do you think there is anything I can do to green it up again this summer? Am I supposed to prune the brown leaves off? If so, what time of year do I do that and where do I cut (just the leaves, or part of the stem too)? I posted a third picture to show the graying. Any ideas on that? Thanks again. I have never had luck with rhododendron and I'd like to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Here is a link that might be useful: Rhodo pics...See MoreBrown spots on rhododendron leaves

Comments (12)Jonathan, An interesting observation. Not sure what 'tip' means. Probably you did not mean those dormant 'scale shields' that first drop off at dormancy break, cannot remember the right technical term. Just went out to inspect all my figs trees. Noticed some that fit your description. At this early stage of spring, I noticed some figs with 'still tightly' held buds that looked reddish. On very close examination, I noticed that it is ACTUALLY the underside of the (very young) curled leaves that FIRST shows up, together with their underside veins! This is what gives the 'tip' the red hue. No contradiction here. Then the leaf flips over and the vein red color fades, as it matures. This is what I observed: My 2 HCs (sources: EL and Hartmann) showed it. Sal's (EL) showed it. VdB (EL) showed it. My #4 unknown (Ta Cenc) showed it (wonder what this fig really is!). My #2 (MOST obvious, also observed by Herman last year) and #5 unknowns (supposedly of the Mission fig type) showed it. All other figs none... Specifically looked at the Black Mission and Vista Mission young figs (both) from Jon, and neither showed it! They may in a more advanced leafing out stage. However I did observe the the Vista breba start as a bead-sized, shoe-polish-black color, and then fade away as the figlets grows... Comments (4)Be aware that is OH clay you will need to check actual soil moisture before watering. You don’t want the roots to be soggy. Also, this might be just the photo, but it looks a bit close to the lattice and steps. This shrub can get to 6’ in all directions so you should have the center of the plant at least 3.5’ from the steps and porch. They are relatively easy to transplant of this is the case, having fairly shallow, wide roots, though after just one season the roots may have not grown too wide. If you do transplant, choose a cool, rainy day or three to do it, plant a bit high if you have clay, and mulch well with compost or shredded bark mulch to help maintain even moisture and reduce weeds....See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
