Comments (37)laurie: Thanks so, so much! Got me back to Image Searching and I feel a lot better : ) roseabbey: WOW, how beautiful is that! You're talented! You are right about me having a lot of windows so after seeing your floors being darker I am not going to fret about that now, and I can see how accessorizing or complimenting dark w/lighter aspects can also pull everything together, so, thank you so much for your input. RE: Board direction, I sounds like it basically boils down to two choices... 1. Run the boards from front door to sliding doors (seems like the general concensus)=hall with boards side to side. or 2. Run the boards side to side (left to right) from front door to sliding doors=hall with boards running longways, like roseabbeys, who is right, it does not seem bowlingalleyish at all to me. I suppose an option is to have a seam where the hallway starts out from the foyer, but, I can't imagine that. Found this not-so-great picture that's shadowed bad but you can sort of see the hall that turns right past that temporary cabinet on the right. My possible plan would be after laying a new floor to maybe have a rug runner in foyer and maybe a matching one for under the dining table? Opinions welcome!...See MoreWhat Trees live Longest in the Suburbs?
Comments (14)Oaks. Some exceptional, old residential neighborhoods (exceptional that they haven't had their trees regularly chopped up) have oaks dominating their lots & even overhanging the houses to some extent. Trees plenty old enough to have seen ice-storms & damaging summer downbursts. The houses show no problems except maybe leaves in the roof-gutters. Some of the old side-streets in Wash DC still have huge, healthy N red oaks growing out of concrete sidewalks. Some other trees that last long w/o any serious issues are Amer sycamores, London planes, hickories, sugar maples, honeylocusts, black walnuts and Norway spruces. Comments (2)You can do wood and put down some nice runners over high-traffic areas. When he rolls his equipment out, just roll out some cheap mats or cheap carpet runners to avoid damaging the floor and roll them back up when he's done....See MoreWalnut kitchen cabinets - too soft?
Comments (11)Gel stain is a thin paint or a thick semi opaque stain. Take your pick of the viewpoint. It obscures the grain. In a dark color, it might as well be paint. It’s a hack around using an unsuitable wood for the intended purpose and look. Much like using toners to mask the quality of wood underneath and even out the use of different woods, or lower grade woods. That’s what the cheap cabinet companies do. They up charge you for using a premium wood like cherry, then source the cheapest possible wood they can and use toners to mask it. Kinda like the old Bombay Co. rubberwood “cherry” tables sold by the zillions. A better woodworker would start with the suitable material for the job rather than trying to hack an unsuitable one to fit the job....See MoreRHM
