island - Yes, we can paint the surround (we've been told). I'd like to live with it as is for awhile though. I do like the color...except for the darn pinkish tone that comes out in certain lighting! It was recommended to paint before installing the surround; maybe we'll just paint the fireplace wall to see if we like it before doing the rest of the room. Our leak caused water damage inside, and our repair turned into redecorating. At least we'll have a new family room when all is done!

Kitchendetective, that wall by the table is the only full wall. Other than that I have a lot of cutting in above and below windows and doors, plus a small wall about 18" wide next to my oven. I'm afraid it would look too chopped up to have those little bits and pieces one color and the table wall a different color. What do you think? I'm really terrible at visualizing. I want to say thanks to all of you for your specific paint suggestions. I've got them all written down and I'm going tomorrow to my local awesome paint store with my bag of samples and see what I come up with. It helps me so much to have specific paints to look at because there are just too many choices and it overwhelms a girl! tkbalt, your kitchen is so pretty. What a transformation from those white slab doors! I'll be back Monday with narrowed down choices and photos of my favorites painted on the wall with my kitchen samples propped up. I went back to the tile store and decided that the brown one is out. I think Chispa is correct, having the whole first floor with brown would be too much. I did pick up a whiter tile upon Color Zen's recommendation. What do you think? The first photo is taken inside under 2700k house light like yesterday. The 2nd photo is taken outside on a very cloudy day. Amazing how the color changes according to the light source! (The gray looks completely brown). The glossy white book is the color of the kitchen base and tall cabinets. The sample on top of the book is the wall cabs and island.

take the plastic off a corner of the cabinet ….looks as though current cabinet with a light stain or clear finish to floor would work and be less hassle. I have used the clear satin coating on wood floors-it does give a little definition and enhances, with the several coats, so the floor boards will be a little richer.
