Comments (0)Lighting is the most important aspect of any room as it can set the mood, highlight objects of art or in some cases the light is simply needed to work by. No matter the needs for lighting, one of the most popular and easy to install are decorative LED lights. They are very flexible so they can be used in any area of the home. What is even better is that they are very cost effective, long lasting and do not use that much electricity when compared to other types of lighting. Those who want to create an atmosphere in a room can even find them in a wide variety of colors. Installing decorative LED lights is easy to do because they come in strips which are flexible. There are many different lengths to choose from and some can be purchased by the inch or centimeter. These custom cuts can be long enough to fit around the entire room or they can just be placed in certain areas such as under a countertop when they are shorter. The amount of energy needed to illuminate them is going to be controlled by a transformer which is purchased separately. Some are going to feel like this type of lighting is expensive to purchase and that it is going to eat up a great deal of electricity. The truth is that these decorative LED light strips are not going to be as expensive to run as other forms of lighting. LED is one of the cheapest forms of lighting on the market and they do not take a great deal of energy to illuminate them. When you add in the fact that they last nearly thirty percent longer than other lights, the savings become even greater. When it comes to setting a mood, decorative LED lights can provide any atmosphere that is wanted. They come in many different colors which is going to help when creating that romantic evening or for a meditation nook in a bedroom. Some light strips even come in multi colors that can be either illuminated one color at a time, or all colors at once. This option is going to require extra hardware for a switch to control the colors. Any of these light strips can also be purchased for indoor or outdoor use. These are slowly gaining popularity at Christmas and the old lights are being phased out a little more each holiday season. For a unique lighting design, decorative LED lights that come in strips can fit that bill perfectly. There is no need to worry about using a great deal of electricity as they highly efficient and do not use a lot of energy. They are also long lasting and they do not need to be changed as often as other light bulbs would need to be which also saves money. Variety is not a problem as LED strip lighting comes in many different colors as well as in multi color strips to create even more unique lighting for the home. Comments (48)Several comments 1. The typical operating temperature for Led diodes is much wider i.e. most should operate between -40 to +140 degrees celsius. Real example The max junction temperature for a Cree XM-L Led diode is ~ 150 celsius or 50 above the boiling point of water. 2. There is a wide selection of LED diodes on the market with a wide range of color, efficiencies, current drive, voltage, ... 3. A LED lamp's longevity is affected by how the lamp/ fixture designer design decisions for example- i. Over driving the current at the expense of lifespan. ii. Which LED components to use - more efficient vs greater max output vs cheaper (given the anticipated production run), ... iii. The quality of the other necessary components - capacitors, resistors, ... iv. The quality of the manufacturing process. SMT (surface mount technology) consistently beats the quality of manual soldering and individual wires. 4. Active cooling (i.e. - fan) is no longer used - not effective or cost efficient, prone to failure and reduces the overall efficiency. The use of the motherboard as a heat sink/ spreader is preferred. The Switch lightbulb utilizes an inert liquid and convection circulation to sink the heat produced. 5. The pricing will drop more when the the LED diode costs are reduced as well as when lighting device designers figure out how to reduce the BOM (bill of materials) cost and simplify the manufacturing process. FWIW, the L prize bulb is not competitive with the Cree bulb (or even the newer Philips LED bulbs) from both a manufacturing and end user consumer standpoint. 6. From an electrical standpoint, the E26 connector is no less efficient than a GU24/ bi-pin connector / wire nuts. 7. The more advanced LED deployments today are done in aircraft, automotive and custom home designs where cost is less of a concern. 8. For the rest, it will take a while before more and better fixtures/ lamps designed with LEDs in mind appear since most folks are used to the traditional glass forms ( bulb, tubes)....See MoreA-15 LED bulb that can work in enclosed fixture
Comments (4)I installed a fixture that a customer had selected and purchased that required a "B" lamp as shown in the chart. Note that "C' lamps also are in the 15 diameter. The numbers refer to the major diameter in 1/8 of an inch -- thus a 15 is 1 7/8" diameter. Your A15 fixture might not accommodate the typically longer C15 lamp-- but it also might do so. Finding an LED suitable for enclosed that will physically fit may prove challenging. My assumption is that such an LED will have a larger heat sink. Definitely inquire of Switch and they may have suggestions that will be helpful....See MoreAGAIN: cans vs. LED cans
Comments (10)We are renovating our home and our architect insisted we go with LED. I think there are about 40-50 of them total. Specifically a full can (4" and 5" throughout home) and a led retrofit kit. The kind that screw in and have the trim and led that fits in. A quick google search shows that there is a newer option for new construction/major construction. The electrician just wires an outlet box in the ceiling and the LED fixture fits right in. There is no need for a can. It looks exactly like a recessed LED when installed. These are about $10-$20 cheaper for materials than going the full can and retrofit route- especially w/ the electrician's discount I'm sure. Install is very simple. Single gang ceiling boxes can't be more than .25 cents a piece. We are going with these once I brought them up to the architect. It's new tech so the electrician and contractor may be wary. After showing it to them I'm sure they'll warm up to it....See More- 6 years ago
