Which Solidago (Goldenrod) is the Best Variety?
Comments (22)Gldno, that Heliopsis cultivar is beautiful! I'm going to keep that one in mind when Bluestone has their sale next June. This thread has got me looking at buying seeds for more Solidago and Heliopsis. Eric_oh, it sounds like you purchased Solidago canadensis (Canada goldenrod). This is a common, rhizomatous goldenrod that is very aggressive - not for the garden. 'Fireworks' is a cultivar of Solidago rugosa, which is also rhizomatous, but apparently the cultivar is not aggressive like the species. Can't believe the nursery or where ever screwed that one up. The clumping Goldenrod species are much better behaved. It's worth noting, for gardening newbies, that Goldenrod does NOT cause hayfever - it has heavy pollen that is insect pollinated. It is Ragweed, which blooms at the same time, that is wind-pollinated and is the culprit in allergic reactions....See MoreBest Fig Varieties for Northeast Texas
Comments (5)Texashomesteader, welcome to the forum. Congrats on your upcoming retirement and good luck with you homestead. I'm in the process of doing the same. I think that the reason people suggest Celeste and Brown Turkey is because they are the most common fig names. The Celeste is the old standby of the south and has found lots of acceptance further north. It bears fairly early, has a bountiful harvest, tolerates rain, doesn't split, and doesn't sour easily unless the rains are really persistent. I would say its a must have for southern orchards. Now for the Brown Turkey. From what I've gathered on the forums, people love them or hate them and when the chips are on the table many a Brown Turkey that people love, turn out to be a Celeste or some other variety. I don't know how much space you have to dedicate to figs but there are many great varieties out there. Others with much more knowledge than I will probably chime in, but don't just limit yourself to the two you mentioned. There are some excellent yellow figs, black figs, and figs that ripen green. Also look at figs that ripen early season, mid season, and late season. That way you can have figs for most of the summer until fall. Do your research now and by this fall you will have an idea of what you want. Fall and early winter is the time to get cuttings to propagate for spring planting. Many varieties are available from forum members for a small fee. Other than that, purchase from some of the reliable nurseries that are mentioned in the forums. Also check out (figs4fun.com) forum, there is a lot of great info and members there. Also it's nice to close with a signature, "gene"...See MoreWhich persimmon variety do you like best?

Comments (1)Where abouts are you located at? Are you near Madisonville? If so I am a tad south of you by around 30 minutes. Brandywines will definitely set fruit but you have to start them out early and get them outside ASAP. You have about a 6 weeks or so window that the plants must be outside ready to go during that time. Otherwise the heat will not allow them to set fruit. I was getting buckets of brandywines last year. This year I planted them again but a mix up at the tomato company left me with something I am not sure what it is. Personally it might be the regular leaf brandywine red variety, but I don't know. All I do know is them suckers are loaded to the max with fruit. From my experience I so far have been able to get fruit from everything I planted....See Morealameda/zone 8/East Texas
