Comments (7)It is common to find designs on the internet plan sites that are awkward combinations of more than one historical style. This one tries to combine the strong symmetrical forms and classical detailing of the immensely popular and greatly varied Colonial Revival Style with the asymmetrical fussy detailing of the Folk Victorian Style. Any segmented cornice returns should be true to their classical roots. Also get the book linked below or better yet hire a professional who knows how to detail a traditional house since someone must draw the details correctly or you will be at the mercy of the builder who may only know what he has seen built in the region and that's not what you want. Also, traditional windows should never touch the roof soffit - there should be a horizontal facia board just under the soffit and the windows should be immediately below that. Where the redundant gable rake over the front entrance came from I can't begin to guess. I would ditch the redundant gable, make the columns round and more substantial with similar railings and move the Palladian window from the garage to over the entrance and make sure all of the paired windows have some width of trim between them instead of being "mulled" tightly together. Put the sofa on any wall where it has room for end tables. Put the chair where it can have a conversation with the sofa. At this point I would redo the curtains to coordinate with the wall and do them in a linen type weave. Remove the crystal chandelier and replace with something simple and maybe oil rubbed bronze. Go shopping for a large piece picture in a simple or frameless style that blends with the plaid pillow; take the pillow with you if necessary. So far so good. If you have end tables and a cocktail table put them in the room only if you like them. If they are wood that should be fine. Send us a picture of the whole room taken from another room so we can see the size etc of the room. I am showing this inspiration room because it is very simple with very trad furniture, but the mantle is very low key and would work nicely in your living room style I think. Also note the colorful throw on the arm chair. This is same room, but wood tables and metal cocktail table, simple window treatments in tones found in living room, and antique armoire that is similar to your Moms tallish piece by fireplace. TV opposite sofa and easy chair for great viewing This looks great; metal table, magazine rack in oil rubbed bronze, brass Pharmacy lamp for reading. Would work next to Mom's chair......these items can be found on line at Ballard Design and other places too; overstock.com, wayfair.com with great prices and great selection. Plaid pillows, one bright color pillow and another item in room (the end table, but could be lamp, vase, picture) done in a bright color to match pillow in intensity. And the upholstered ottoman adds a fun touch, but sized to match the sofa. Again a rustic trad feel with a pair of large photos over sofa. Great ottoman, lamps, footstool. Pillows match colors in photos of family members.... These are just inspiration but it might help you select the items that the room needs to frame and support the sofa style and colors. Nothing set in stone but a place to begin....See MoreHow do I make my kitchen look less meh?
Comments (44)I think your kitchen is very nice, I don’t think the backsplash clashes with the cabinetry and I’m often critical of that in a lot of kitchen photos I see. You know what your kitchen reminds me of? Those rooms where a lot of different shades of whites, creams, and ivories are used... they don’t really match, but they all just go together nicely... and the thing (I think) that ties them all together is a lot of use of texture. So, for that, I like the chairs you have that are woven, as opposed to the smooth, white chairs. And I don’t think you need that tablecloth, I think the table looks just fine without it. I’d add some natural sea grass like colors and textures and some houseplants, maybe some wood cutting boards against the backsplash... any other colors I would gravitate towards would be soft blues and greens, nothing too intense....See MoreHow can I make this bathroom less brown?
Comments (13)"The window in the shower also needs to be waterproofed..." Huge red flag, The shower/bath combo should never have been installed without that window already having been waterproofed. The waterproofing of the window is done behind the tile. It is literally impossible to waterproof the window at this stage, but even installing a vinyl window and minimizing the risk of leaks in this case would be a very complex job requiring a certain skill set. If there is evidence of leakage, you are looking at gutting the enclosure to fix it, which would certainly fix the brown issue....See Morekate greene
