Oh, I forgot I also have some extra Haworthia retusa and Graptosedum Alpenglow Vera Higgins. Both were divisions from very full pots I purchased. I can take some photos in the next day or so if you're interest in trading Monkey Tail for any of the above.

They are very cute. I would take an Adenium seedling if you have one to spare, but if not I will just send a tail to you. You don't have to send anything:).

I'll take pictures of the seedlings and you can choose which one you want. The seeds I got were Black Diamond & Pink Panther. I think I saved the images from the ad but now know what the flowers look like can be highly variable and may look NOTHING like their patents.

First one is Pink Panther & 2nd one is Black Diamond.

See how much furier hers is. If you rub your hand against the fur you'll poke yourself.

Honestly Tyler after seeing the furrier one up close and personal, totally the same cactus;).

I think it comes down to the way the cactus is grown. The new growth on the furrier one looks just like mine. Her Monkey Tail have been hanging on a shepherds hook in all day sun, I'm guessing never ever gets watered, and the mix is rock hard.

Mine hangs from and is protected by a mini apple tree. Gets watered 3-4 times a month. Along with getting fertilized:), it's in a much better mix too;). So the 6 months I've had it it has lived a cush life;).

It's a protective thing. I'm pretty sure if I took mine, acclimated to all day sun and never watered, it would probably stop growing length and growing course spikey "fur";). I wouldn't doubt that some are furrier than others, but I think it's more of an environmental thing.

Im sure age of the plant plays a part too:).

For me its a fast grower. I have one longer than 3 ft. This is 6mths from a 3" cutting

My Rat Tail is so slow. Do you have a Rat Tail and does it grow slow? I'm wondering if it's me.

I just bought that one it's not as fast of a grower as MT, but it has put on some growth since I've had it. That's another one I can't wait till it blooms:).

My Disocactus flagelliformis aka Rat Tail I've had for about 4 years and I swear has barely put on any growth. I see my MT putting on inches in months and I just wish my Rat Tail was like that;).

Oh well:). It's strange how I never really see MT considering how easy it is to root and how fast they grow.

Wow, very fast by looking at the pics posted above. And those cliffs in Bolivia are amazing. Those seem hard grown for sure. Does it rain a lot there? I wonder how long it took them to get that long.

I have a MT coming in the mail from one of the members on here and have found out that there is not a whole lot of info out there on them like soil conditions.

Kara, is this rat tail? It doesn't look healthy. It was growing in a very shady area. Totally forgot about it :-/

Looks like it, but like you've said it's been sitting in the shade so needs more lights and it's hard to tell;). Mine is super dehydrated needs to wayyy more water. Maybe that's why it only grows an inch a year. Go figure;).

Lydia, do you use Osmocote? I've been thinking about using it next spring. I'm not worried about over fertilizing. I would be careful. Plus we don't get rain water 6-7 months out of the year.

It's gets real old real fast using the liquid stuff. Especially for my in ground stuff.

I have been looking all over the Internet for a monkey tail cactus (Hildewintera Cleistocactus Colademononis ). There are only seeds available. Does anyone know where I can get a cutting or small plant? I have lots of different cactus and many different colors of dessert roses that I could trade for a cutting.

susie, i sometimes see them for sale on some of the Facebook groups like Succlent Market Place, The Succulent Store or B.E.S.T. (stands for buy, exchange, sell, trade, although I'm not quite sure what the difference is between exchange and trade...). These are closed groups and you have to "ask" to join the group. In my experience the admins of these groups have gotten back to me with a "yes" in a day or less. Once you join the group you can see what the members have to offer, typically pots & plants. I've purchased plants from these Facebook groups in the past and never been disappointed. In general, the prices are good, the buyer pays shipping and all those that I have dealt with I've paid using my PayPal account. They send you an invoice based on what you've indicated you want and your zip code. It's pretty easy. I've never exchanged. Only purchased.

I bought one from them last year.

I've tried C.winterii a few times. A no go for me. Not in a pot,not in ground. They without a doubt hate winter rains. Maybe in the bay area a covered patio would pull them through. In winter rains? You can see them rot by the hour ( almost!)...turning black.

Stan, I have to protect mine in the winter. I cover the tails with frost cloth if the temps don't drop lower than 40F. I will bring inside if it's cooler than that. Cold wet weather is a definite death sentence for these guys.

I notice Kara,their spines seem to hold water..just adding to the cold and chill in a bay area winter rain. But,they love sun. So,they are really greenhouse plants here.

They seem to be fine down here in the winter rains.

I know. Why I said bay area winters. When you deduct 10f more degrees per night in Dec-Jan? They hate that and wet.

Hello. I know this is an old thread but I wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions on how to get the monkey tail to develop “fur”. I recently purchased one and although it’s a good ten to twelve inches in length, it’s nice and golden with zero fur. I was assured by the grower that it is a monkeys tail but I’m not so sure. I’ll post a picture within a few minutes. Many images online look similar to mine but even on Those, you can see little strands of fur developing.

The spines are very soft and I can stroke my hand against them without a problem. I really want mine to look like Lydia‘s.

More light. You will never get them in Europe or the great north to be as dense as those in Soucal or the dry tropics.

Jess, yours might be a “golden monkey tail”, Cleistocactus hildewintera, instead of the white long haired Cleistocactus hildewintera subspecies colademononsis. Seedlings of the white monkey tail only later develop the white hair, but yours looks like the golden one IMO. I have both, and yours looks more like the C. hildewintera.

The golden does get golden hairy when grown best. I gave up on them. They always lost ground by the day when I would bring them home. I see plenty of them thriving on stumps or pots in soucal. Kara is having the best success I've heard of here.

Thank you. That’s what I was unable to figure out if they were different species or the same grown in different conditions. I guess “golden hairy” will be my goal from here on until I manage to get a hold of the colademononsis. I’d love to grow both I just never expected they’d be so difficult to find.

Thank you Lydia. I purchased two tails literally a few seconds ago. I’m unfortunately quite impatient. I tend to find fabulous succulents quite cheap around here but i don’t want to wait until I happen across one. The golden version above only cost me $4. I thought it was pretty amazing. I walked out of that nursery a very happy woman. So I was hoping I’d find a bargain like this again but just bit the bullet and ordered on eBay.

Ok, then I can’t help you find one. Sorry. I hope you get the right one now. My golden one also grows quite quickly. I am hoping for some flowers next summer. My white one isn’t there by a long shot.

Go to succulents gone wild and they have plenty. They are 50$ for 3 together and I believe you could get just one for less. I think that 3 is a great price because I've seen them for much more and those look unhealthy. Let me know how it

I ended up purchasing from succulent*jewels on eBay. I got two rooted cuttings about the size that’s shown on succulents gone wild website for $22.49 with shipping. It’s the best price online, at least best price I could find.

Also late to the convo., but you can get a good deal on monkey tails from Chitrasorchidcactus on eBay right now. They are 10” for $10, and she generally sends extras for additional postage. Aporophyllum, disocactus, true monkey tails and Epis all for sale by her. The confusion on names etc., is partly because there are so many hybrids now. Mattslandscape carries some gorgeous hybrids on eBay, but they are ridiculously priced, however, good for referencing what’s out there.

They love heat. Friends in Lathrop Ca. grow rat tails fine. They do protect in winter ..but they are always outdoors. I have yet to get any type..small or large stems to do well. In pots,in ground.

I think I needy a Roadrunner cartoon like cracked boulder to plant them in.

Did any of you guys end up getting the hairy monkey tail? I really want to purchase. I’ve bought a few but I’m thinking they aren’t the hairy ones.

More sun, more hair, but seedlings also need time to develop their hairy coats. That may take a few years, is my impression. Cuttings from mature plants are hairy from the get go.
