Knockouts get pretty big. Have you looked up their mature size against the size of the yard?

Sure you can, but you would need to do it yearly. Knockouts are great, but why continually fight nature?

I might suggest going to your local nursery and asking one of their professionals what they might have. There are various bushes, etc. that have a miniature habit or pencil thin growth. I'm not an expert on trees or shrubs, so I can't really give specific recommendations.

There is a rose forum (rather lively) and you can see what we have as far a tree/shrubs forums. This forum is not that active as you can see by my opinion being the sole one.

Hi, We do a lot of work with native plants along our unfenced border in Maryland, primarily to attract birds and pollinators and provide color. I am unclear if you want to attach climbers to the fence or if the fence should remain pristine as a back drop. In Maryland we have have good success with chokecherry which is tall and slender and has berries (ours are red, but there is also a black variety) for birds through the winter black-eyed susan, our state flower, which blooms from late June through October here, and cone flower which also blooms all summer into fall. I would talk with your local nursery AND check out native plant garden for NJ on the web. Many state extension sites have not only ideas but sometimes garden plans for different types of sites. We have also gotten some ideas by walking our neighborhoods and parks to see what looks good!
