Austin Queen of Sweden
Comments (24)Long time no see Morden Man (and it shouldn't be so long). I appreciate your comments on this rose including taking the time to post those wonderful pictures. Even if Queen of Sweden has a few prickles, compared to my Tamora it will be considered thornless by me (grin)......I just noticed last night while looking over the Roses Unlimited catalog that they carry Queen of Sweden. With a container rose (which is what I'm planning for this one) I definitely learn towards own root, so that could work out well if the rose is vigorous enough...I know DA likes to plant his roses in multiples, but I never cared for that for a number of reasons, one being increased disease problems in our hot humid climate where air circulation is so important. But if this is a healthy rose then that problem might be lessened somewhat.....And Kate, what you said about subtle pastel colors blahing out from a distance holds true here also. Those pastels can really glow in climates like the PNW or England where the sunlight is of a more gentle sort and often partially obscured by clouds. Up close and personal via a container on a walkway or entryway is a way to appreciate some of these subtle beauties......Now I just have to figure where I can possibly put two other roses since RU has a 3 rose minimum....Thanks to everyone for thier experiences.........Maryl...See MoreQueen of Sweden - scent
Comments (4)In my garden it is quite a light scent - sometimes undetectable and other times very soft. I'm not sure how to describe it. I was just out in the garden smelling St. Swithun and it had that wonderful licorice scent David Austin calls myrrh. I don't detect that in my Queen of Sweden. It sure is a fantastic rose! Hardy here in my zone 5 garden, extremely disease resistant for me, good with rebloom, and those beautiful soft pink full blooms that sit up straight on strong canes and smile at you whenever you go by....See MoreQueen of Sweden or Geoff Hamilton?
Comments (24)I honestly haven't smelled enough roses to know the difference of scents, I only started growing roses this summer and the ones that were already at the house we moved into have no real scent and this Austin rose (whatever it may be!) definitely smells strong to me. I also think my rose shatters quite quickly which is one of the things that made me question whether it's Queen of Sweden or not because QoS is described as being a good cut flower and long-lasting in the vase. I've only cut one flower for the house and it seemed pretty droopy in the vase....See MoreJubilee Celebration & Queen of Sweden
Comments (9)The Endeavour's done very well through hot humid summers & freeze-thaw winters for 8 years now in central VA, where blackspot pressure is very high. Planted by the steps of the front porch, this rose catches my eye multiple times a day. Very rarely over the years have I seen a single leaf beginning to spot, stripped & trashed the entire leaflet. That's pretty much it for fungal control in this no spray garden, so have to agree with Austin's assessment of "very healthy" on this one in regard to blackspot in this garden. Mildew is an occasional fleeting problem here solved with plain water hose spray, and I've not seen this rose affected. I'm still enchanted by this rose in every way. Very willing to bloom in rapid repeat with snap deadheading, large old style flowers up to 5", mostly in clusters, that open slowly as they expand, lasting in full bloom a week in heat & longer in cool, with other buds opening in staggered sprays, so by the time the first flush is waning, the next is right behind. Blooms begin warm salmon pink with amber undertones, transforming daily with infusions of apricot & peach till finally overlaid with dusty lavender. The petals show a silky sheen & the flowers are exquisite, as is the deeply satisfying old rose & fruit salad complex perfume. This rose is grafted, yet shows a graceful slightly arching vase shape 3' high & wide. An own root twin is scheduled to arrive this Spring & take its place at the other side of the steps. Will be the only Austin duplicate here, an indication of how highly I value this rose. A heart-throbber! Seldom take the camera to the garden, so unfortunately have no pics to share. All of your photos convinced me to rectify that this year! Marina's portraits at HMF capture the beauty of this rose before it attains a blend of hues.
