Building Green - Here to Stay?
Comments (15)Actually green has little to do with redo/fixing of materials. It's more tied in with eco-friendly, toxicity, and impact on environment (and a host of other factors). At its extreme - green can be as environmentally non-invasive/toxic as using earth, straw/vegetation and round wood that is locally harvested (fsc certified). Now, how sustainable is that ? probably very sustainable but at the same time it probably suffers from longevity. However, if you use longevity as a measuring stick then you should use concrete and steel which are both considered high energy products. That isn't to say its bad, just that you have to amortize or work that energy cost back over the span of its lifetime to determine its eco-footprint. Like I mentioned earlier - there is a lot of relativity in green. Are you talking sustainability, longevity, energy efficient, eco-impact ? And something you think is green is totally irrelevant or eco-wasteful on someone else's radar. And yes, please please do not equate energy star as being "green". Energy star is a government crapshoot to try and be a bit more efficient with a branded label that people can market off of. You can build a 2 story 25000 sq ft home with one person with all the concrete, steel, glass, copper, and have huge open verandas that the AC/heat runs out of all year with $20,000 electricity bills. But if you put in nice windows, insulation, appliances, and properly installed ducts you can be labeled an energy star home. How green is that ? LEED is a step in the right direction but even that has its issues. It unfortunately credits things for certain things that doesn't make everyone on a level playing field (or discredits). It's also trying to define things in a certain way but at least its a step in some definable direction which is more than just "Green". If you're trying to get into green space, I'd highly suggest you study the LEED fo Homes from the USGBC. It will (for better or worse) be the next "label" that people in the "green" space will try and throw around....See MoreWood veneer wall paneling: here to stay?
Comments (16)If it means anything or not about whether this trend sticks, here's this. I have a friend that is a cabinet maker. In the last year he was hired by a very well known San Francisco architect to do his office in VGF. Boss's office, Board Room, all of the open office(for 17-21), copy room and kitchen/lunchroom. I went to give him a hand on the Saturday prior to the Monday he handed it off. By Wednesday, he had a request from the same architect to do 1800SqFt. of kitchen family room, etc., in cabinets of VGF in his brand new house on the water in Tiburon. So, it looks as though the designer's that are on the leading edge of building "fashion" think the trend is here for awhile. Personally, it reminds me of the fifties when fir was everywhere and always reminds me of "cheap", but that's a personal bias. When it comes to teak (I'm a boater), walnut, and other beautiful woods (there are lot's of exotics available), wenge, jatoba, cocobolo, then I'm on board. Certain ones will be around for a long time, others might be rare or unheard of in years to come....See MoreNeed help with my kitchen sink, which is staying here...with us :)
Comments (11)Thank you everyone! So happy this is over :) As for sink, it's one of those triple sinks with small middle sink. My mom absolutely loves it, so we're going to use it (LOL) since mom has been totally cool about so much of the remodel. She likes vintage and thinks it's going to be great...and she's moving in with us this fall. Again, we're very lucky that mom is totally cool. So, I found a few base cabinets...I'm guessing a drop in sink can have a slightly smaller base, since the sink lip is hanging over the counter??? But they seem all wrong. I'm really temped to try to build a plywood box/cabinet and install sink with a very cute curtain in the front. Totally vintage and a place to put more fun, floral fabric! What do you all think?...See MoreCaesarstone Noble Grey or Frosty Carrina w/ Gray Cabinets with Brass??
Comments (44)I think there's enough contrast between those grays in the 1st pic, but really depends on the look you are going for and what your backsplash, paint, and hardware will look like. Any ideas about those? I actually really love the Frosty Carrina. I did not consider it until late in the game because I thought it was a little bland based on the sample, but when I saw the full slab, I changed my mind....See MoreRelated Professionals
