Help-Granite counter support on island with overhangs and opening
Comments (0)We are doing kitchen upgrade- keeping our cabinets but replacing laminate countertops with granite. Our island is a bit unusual- two 18 " cabinets with a 30" opening between them, so my husband who uses a wheelchair can wheel underneath. We'd like to add 10" to either end of the island, making it a total of 86" long. The width is 36", with the cabinets being 26" and a 10" overhang. We know we need to add extra support for the granite. We are thinking of using two corbels on each end to cover the 10" overhang. Then using the counterbalance brackets I've read about on this forum for the 10" overhang on the long side. My questions are: are 2 of the brackets enough support, or would I need 4 brackets to support the 86" length? And do I need any extra support for the 30" opening between the cabinets? We'd like to get this worked out before the granite guys come to measure and template. Thanks for any suggestions....See Moreplease help select granite countertop
Comments (14)Vt - Congrats on your new purchase or what appears to be Totally agree w/rjr - This kit is funky & quirky - I wouldn't spend a dime until you are in it and understand the space/function (or lack thereof) for awhile - appliances are costly & those look like they may not have the function a working kit needs. The DW looks like a small size? a big investment in granite is not going to help this kit - blue pearl will fight all the other blues and dated elements in the space a few less costly things come to mind that I think would help 1- getting rid of the popcorn ceiling - that will be labor intensive but worth it 2- better lighting! - the fluorescent fixture is screaming dated, as is the wood trim on the cabs 3. I'd paint the wood trim the same color as the cabs - take a door to your paint shop & ask them to match the color of cabs -remove door, sand, use a stain killer (zinsser makes a good one), and paint with a high quality scrubbable paint - you could even use BM floor paint which has expoxy so it will hold up - That would make a HUGE difference - the wood totally fades into the cabs 4. Get rid of WP and paint a nice quiet light color - 5. The vinyl tile is also not adding anything - removal of that & even new peel/stick tile would have a much better appeal All in if you are willing to do the labor I would venture to say you could do all the above for a few hundred dollars which would have a far better impact than thousands spent on granite. http://www.doityourself.com/ http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infpai/popcornoff.html http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/repair/msg0721084125203.html http://www.armstrong.com/flooring/products/vinyl/_/N-73zZ6wp?Ntt=tile Then after you lived in the space & recovered from purchasing a new home you can be better suited to make decisions about the space, elements etc... - I see a nice sunny room adjacent to the kitchen - I'm typically not a fan of knocking down walls - but this space seems suited to do so. good luck...See MoreWhich granite to choose with Symphony Taupe tile???
Comments (5)Beautiful finishes thus far! Your desired concept image is that of a beautiful, classic, and timeless space and your finish selection translates perfectly. The second granite option seems to have the least amount of figure competing with that of the floor tile and it also has a bit of taupe in it which will pull in from the flooring for an element of cohesion. In addition, a light countertop will certainly serve as a nice contrast to darker cabinetry, so, going with the granite in the second photo or one very similar would be the best way to go. Best of luck with your project!...See MoreHelp! Stained Granite Countertop
Comments (3)You need to make a poultice to get the stain out. Make a thick paste(peanut butter consistency) from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and spread over stain. Cover with saran wrap and leave overnight. You may have to repeat this until the stain is out. Once stain is out let area dry and then you need to make sure to reseal your counters....See MoreB C
