Living and dining room dilemma
We just recently moved in to a new house. Its a blank canvas, and we would love some feedback on how we could spruce up the living and the dining rooms on a limited budget.The dining room is 14" square, 10 Ft ceiling. We have a 6" round dining table, but need to get chairs.The living room is 16" square, 1- ft ceiling and has a coffered ceiling.
We were looking to do something dramatic with the dining and the living room ceilings, and perhaps leave the wall paint as is (except for the ugly pink on the winscoting in the dining area. One idea was to use silver leaf wallpaper on the ceiling, but then i am not sure how it would look on the coffered ceilings, and if it will be labor intensive.Also what kind ?? any suggestions are welcome. Our design style is "Transitional"Another idea was to use grasscloth wallpaper and perhaps have an accent wall in the dining room, and just paint the ceiling white.But then how do we make the same idea flow to the living room ? Should we do something with the bookcases there ? Should we paint them so they pop out ?
so many questions.And then do we replace the fan with a chandelier ? How big should the rug & the sofas be in a 16x16 room ? I'll appreciate any suggestions you all have.

2 tables in former dining room/living room

Comments (3)I think the space would open up if you removed the wainscot. It is creating a "box" that stops the eye and says, "That's all, folks!" I agree with Suki Kabuki that the ladder shelves must go. They always remind me of college decor, along with milk crate shelves. Consider putting the TV on the wall where the ladder shelves are, floating the sofa facing it and moving the dining table near the window where you now have the TV area. I think you should eliminate one of rugs and only use one at the sofa. The two side tables by the TV are cluttering, but you might use the taller one by a sofa arm if it arrives within and inch of it, up or down. Comments (20)Yes, I agree to have the sofa facing the fireplace and flank the fireplace with the chairs. IMO the only thing that is really not working here is the coffee table, it doesn't seem to have enough weight with the glass top and open bottom. and ottoman with a tray might be nice in front of the fireplace. I feel like the dining room could have a buffet to cozy it up a bit. I think you would need a pretty large rug, which might overwhelm but it could be a great way to tie it into the adjoining space. Over the fireplace, you need to put art, something that ties to the large piece that is in the dining room that will also bring cohesion to the space. You could put that mirror over the cabinet you have in the dining room on the short wall. Maybe you could try the rug from the living room in the dining room just to see if you like a rug in there......See MoreMrs. S

6 years agoyou know i just got these and if you do not need to shut your curtains all the time you might want them for a hair more sophistication - at least to me.
are they not just adorbs? now i also love these and think they are very upmkt
gray with a touch of yellow or gold or
dark blue with a silvery white. yummmy! all with white sheers of course.
about gray. it is trending out, as are accent walls. but if you find you truly want these things then do them, because they have meaning to you and that is what all this worthwhile. but if you are going to get upset the first time someone says it is oldhat then you should look at other things. something that may change your world is the point that you should get your couch and your rug, then everything else, then you paint. because no color is pure, they all have undercurrents and highlights.
I also believe that if you want to keep costs down, any special affects on the ceiling are going to wipe out your budget.

6 years agoAnil, let us know a color scheme you like. I'd search around on pinterest for pictures until you see colors you like. You like gray--you like a big of glam--now just pick another color you like. At least, that's what I would do. Since you're just starting out, it may be a good idea to keep the walls relatively neutral (except that I really like the silver ceiling idea), and get color from a rug, pictures, draperies, upholstery on the chairs. That way, it's easier to change out as you discover your style.
As for the bookcases, I like them a lot. I like white painted moldings and bookcases, and you have that! Some people get a great effect by painting just the back wall of the bookcase. That could really pulll some color into the room. Or, get some mirrors cut to fit precisely on the back wall of your bookcases. I think that would would be pretty inexpensive at a glass shop. Like this:
This picture has pale gray walls, and is pretty neutral, but the bling comes from the mirrors, and the color is in the accessories.
