Sweet potato problems in curing

Yes, this is a new thread, I’m feeling pretty desperate, and don’t know what’s going on.

My recently harvested sweet potatoes are in a loosely closed cardboard box, with a heat mat, at about 85 degrees for curing. Today is Day 5.

At harvest, they were firm and free of any dark areas on the skin, although many of the largest ones had cracks.

However, as they cure, I’m seeing dark spots develop, and many of the thinner ones are showing some “wrinkling” of the skin, and even appear a bit “soft” or flexible.

This doesn’t seem right...am I wrong about this? What’s going on? Why are my sweet potatoes deteriorating so fast?

These dark patches were not there when I harvested them.

I can actually bend the end. The whole thing feels slightly soft, kind of like an apple that has shriveled a bit in storage. About half the potatoes are doing this, after under a week.
