Affordable Exterior Upgrade
Comments (6)It would help to have a smallish tree a distance off the right and left corners of the house in order to "frame" it, give some visual screening/separation from the neighbors' houses, and give the house a look of being "protected." Also, have a foundation planting that is full and complete and doesn't impede the window or entrance spaces. This usually means that the planting bed is many feet deep. (6' to 10' or so.) The planting bed would likely transition outward (toward the street) to include trees at the ends of the house (as described above.) I don't think the unpainted fence -- since it is a fairly major element -- is doing you any favors. We don't know why it's there, but I would look for a way to get rid of, or alter, it. The stoop looks sufficiently wide enough. We can't see it, but there should be a nice, wide landing at its base. A walk going to the drive area should be far enough from the house to allow for a sufficiently deep foundation planting space. Shrubs ought to coordinate with windows. The pair of windows at the left are close enough that a single, massive dome shaped shrub would work for them. Other windows would get their own shrubs....See MoreSuggestions for Exterior Upgrades?
Comments (4)I never like to mix muntins (i.e. grids) by elevation. If you have them on a given facing of a home (i.e. North, South, East, West), then I recommend staying consistent on that side of the home at that point....See MoreHelp me spend $30k to upgrade the exterior of my home
Comments (11)The rule of thumb for shutters is: they must look as if they can be USED. If you spend money on something that looks too small, it will be a waste. The upper windows cannot take shutters (because there isn't enough space) so I would look at something else. The Safety/Medical Professional in me (my mother used to spout statistics at us as children...all the ways children could die) is CRYING OUT for a railing around the veranda. Seeing large, open gaps on the porch where people go to break there legs, backs, heads, etc makes me VERY VERY NERVOUS. I would be so nervous I wouldn't get any closer to the edge than the front door. Go ahead and take the 'shutters' off the list and add a balcony all the way around. That should eat several thousands. When does the roof need to be redone? You have a lot of roof surface with several steep slopes. Both size AND slope increase the cost of a roof replacement. Yours is going to be substantial. Whatever you save on the paint/railing you are welcome to put the roof money away for a (heheheh) rainy day. Most roofs are 15 - 25 year items. Hopefully in your price range they went with the 25 year roof. How old is the house?...See MoreIdeas to upgrade our boring exterior to intercultural architecture
Comments (2)You have a classic house. In general, you need a really talented architect to turn classic into "intercultural" and "unique"; you're unlikely to get that from Houzz. None of us know what you mean by "intercultural." How a bunch of strangers is going to personalize your home to your uniqueness is a mystery to me. Here's what I'd do: Work on the landscaping, it's an easy place for an upgrade. Maybe add some foo dogs to your porch step Talk to your spouse about what elements of their heritage they want reflected in their house, if any Paint the white trim around the door cream. Learn to love the house you bought. Otherwise, hire an architect and budget some big bucks. Here's what I wouldn't do: Add a "somewhat modern" awning to the porch of a very traditional house Waste money changing a roof, unless it's in bad shape Waste money changing siding, unless it's failing...See MorePeke
