Are the shelves themselves 6" deep? Or is that the entire cabinet depth?

The trick to making that space functional is to have adjustable shelves, with each shelf containing things that are the same height (quart jars on one shelf, pints on another, for example). That way there is no wasted space between your stuff and the shelf above.

Without seeing the space, it's hard to know if this would be worth it or not. I imagine cabinets that size would be relatively expensive for the storage provided.

I built shelving for media storage in a hallway - notice the DVD shelves are taller than the CD shelves. These shelves are 6", and 6' long.

If you are short on pantry space I would definitely consider utilizing it.

We had one like that in our old kitchen (sorry, no pics). I loved it because it held the all the cans and they were only one layer deep, so no having to root around looking behind to see what was hiding.

You will find it wonderfully useful space. Ours is used for cans of pet food in the kitchen. Another in our master bath holds T.P.

It depends on your layout. Yes, 6" deep cabinets can be useful, but will they be located where you'll use them?

My current and not remodeled kitchen has a continuous band of Windows that stop 6 inches from each corner, and the upper cabinets hang in front of the glass 6 inches.

That wall also has two exhaust vents that come up through the floor, through a base cabinet and out.

The maximum width of the kitchen is also 7'3".

The wall with the weird obstructions (There are also ducts and a stack), will have a series of 6",9", and 15" deep cabinets, floor-ceiling with drawers in the 15". I have been doing a lot of measuring and it's surprising how much will fit into this especially if you start thinking of the drawers as standard drawers just sideways.

I loved mine in my very first kitchen remodel that I did almost 25 years ago. Wow! Getting old! I coined the term "Cantry" at our house. They're not cheap to do...but very nice! 6" deep overall will still give you room...even for the wider cans. But check your cabinet specs if that matters. They're not cheap because most manufacturers don't give a price break to reduce the cabinet depth down that much. The main cost is still all in the front frame and doors. So even if they do discount to reduce, you won't save a whole lot. But do I recommend them? YES!
