Winter is coming... leave bare or cover a newly cleared area?
Comments (11)I'd like to chime in. I don't have experience using this method over areas with previously growing trees but it sure worked for some things that were pretty tough (like giant wild blackberry bushes, vines with huge underground root systems and lots of tall woody-stemmed field weeds). In fact, this forum was the first place I learned of this method. Cardboard. I now use it ANY TIME I am creating a new bed or I just want to get the weeds under control in certain areas without spending a fortune on brush killer. No longer do I try to dig up or spray weeds before planting. I just smother the entire area in a layer of overlapping cardboard so no sun gets through and then pile topsoil on top of that if I'm going to turn it into a flowerbed. My current project is an 80-ft. x 6 ft. patch of land in between my daylily field and the gravel road. The weeds were so tough and tall here you couldn't see the daylilies in bloom beyond it. I'm not making this a flowerbed but I don't want it a weedy mess so this summer I covered the entire strip with heavy-duty cardboard and covered it with a shallow layer of mulch to keep the cardboard from blowing away and so it looks nice. EVERYTHING underneath has died and is staying dead. Every so often in the beginning a straggler will poke out around the edges trying to reach the sun and then I spray it a couple of times with some weed killer and it's a goner. I've told everyone I know how effective this is. This process may take a month or more to kill the weeds for good but I just do it a little at a time as I collect the cardboard (which is free from any Walmart, big box store, etc...). Now that it's dead I can take off the mulch and re-use it elsewhere or just let it continue to decompose there and improve the soil. After 3 months the cardboard is like paper and the remnants can simply be raked away or dug in when the area is planted. AWESOME TECHNIQUE and my thanks go out to whoever made the post where I first read about it. Danielle...See MoreGetting out the weeds for planting a woodland garden
Comments (13)Thank you for your great suggestions! I had a busy week and couldn't get back on. Thanks for letting me know that you think the plastic idea is not good for this project. I'm actually very familiar with what's growing there and am wondering if maybe I don't have a woodland...just a thicket area with some trees? I think this was just the "edge" of a farm field at one time that a farmer allowed to just "fill in" as it wanted. Some of the trees are cottonwood and buckthorn, there may be an elm. I'm actually pretty knowledgeable about trees and some of them just plain have me "stumped". As for the native plants...it is mostly goldenrod that grows in the sunnier areas and some type of tall grass that covers the entire field behind my little wooded strip. There's some yarrow in there, which I've already made use of on my property and which grows in my lawn. Other than that, there really aren't any wild flowers. I've watched this area grow every year because I'm very keen on preserving things if they are nice. But as for the goldenrod, my husband and I both have allergies and it will be a blessing to get it out, even though I do think goldenrod can be beautiful. Your suggestions are good...I think I'll use round up on a mop head or glove so that I can be more selective and perhaps just do a portion at a time. Thank you so much! Comments (1)The "clear liquid" is coolant for the picture tube. If it leaks onto the circuit board, it will corrode the connections and damage the circuit board. If there is no "coolant" the phosphor inside of the picture tube will be burned by the bright electronic beam that makes the picture. This will leave a permanent dark area on the picture tube face. You need to have the set serviced. The lens will need to be cleaned, the "seal" will need to be replaced or repaired & new coolant installed. Meanwhile, place something plastic between the circuit board and the picture tubes to prevent the coolant from getting on the circuit boards. good luck, pw...See MoreTexas Easter Woodland Walk About
Comments (10)The money for a 7' deer fence around this land is not in my bank account, nor the energy. The mountain lion comes and goes but they roam and people in the neighborhood still insist on feeding the deer. The lion has been around a lot this year and the deer are much more timid. I have sen tracks and scat within 100' of the house.I actually see some blooming Yucca rupicola and hesperaloe in the woods. The hesperaloe is planted by me. . The Y. rupicola have not successfully bloomed in years. They have been decapitated in their deer asparagus stage. Every year I see tons of the stalks and every night the deer tease me and clip them off here and there till they are all gone. They fool with my hope every year. I am still holding my breath. These are just in the close by area around my buildings. I am too lazy to walk out too far today. I have to get to work. It is GREEN this year. As of tueday Texas and OK is now without Exceptional drought anywhere in the 2 state area for the first time in about a decade. Let see how long that lasts. I think this state of wetness is as ephemeral as the mushroom caught in the thorns of my cactus garden....See MoreDj Zullo
