Built in bookshelves with TV not centered???
Comments (9)fori, I was thinking about the fact that the protrusion of 15" at one end might be more of an issue than the fact that the tv is not centered. I might be able to move the TV (15" section) down more toward the middle and have a narrower section of bookshelves on the other side, although it wouldn't be centered. Point taken about the tv being displayed as though the most important thing in the room. Thanks for the photo flymom65. I've been trying to find some where the tv and/or fireplace wasn't centered just to get an idea of how it might look. Not bad. Is there anymore bookshelves to the left of the fireplace or is all on just the one side?...See MoreBeadboard Backing with Shaker Built-in Shelves?
Comments (14)i think beadboard a little too common/nantucket/whatever for your desire, and i agree that a custom milled back would be more in keeping with your vision. look for some proportions in the room you can re-use on the back of the unit, (maybe the floor?) and it will probably give you the effect you're seeking. and hey macv, is there another forum you could suggest? i love this one, but could use another as i do my research. my home aspires to sophistication, so far i think we come close, we've got a contemporary and unique farmhouse--excellent view forces some contemporary window walls for instance...but need to look at the details more closely. thanks--and op, sorry to hijack....See MoreIdeas for Filling the Shelves of My Built-In
Comments (19)I think your sectional choice would look great if you keep the dark wood. If you are at all thinking you might want to paint the shelving to tie it into the fireplace more and lighten the space, then it may be a little dark and heavy. But if you darken the back of the shelves like the 3rd pic I posted, or leave them as is, then I think it would look perfect. Some people here seem to be anti-sectional, but I love them. I would take some blue painter's tape and draw the outline dimensions on your floor where you would want to place it, just to see if the scale is right for the room (since you say you are new to decorating). It will help you see if it's too big or too small or just right and where it will fit best. Also think about whether you will get an area rug and what kind you might choose and make sure the sectional would work with that, too....See MoreOld school tv opening in built ins
Comments (18)The only thing you can do with this without changing the shelving at all would be to try to find a small piece of furniture with a couple of drawers that would fit into the space. With minimal change you could take two of the shelves that are behind the TV and move them into the space aligned with the current shelving. Remove the existing trim on the shelf above the doors and replace it with one piece going all the way across with the new shelves in place. If you could get a set of doors for the front center it would be better than open shelving. No matter what you do the new TV is always going to look awkward floating in front of the shelves. These shelves are stationary - someone anchored them to the walls, but that does not make them permanent. They really are not that hard to remove and you can do it yourself at zero cost. You may be able to use one or both sides in another room - maybe the babies room for some extra storage - a place for toys and books. You could use both on opposite sides of one wall and place a single shelf between the two and create a desk for future homework time....See MoreRelated Professionals
