Custom cabinets: industry standard for drawer box - cabinet back gap?

Raymond Cooke

Is there an industry standard for the gap between the back of a drawer box and the back wall of a cabinet? We had custom cabinets made for several rooms. Most of the cabinets have a 2-2.5" gap, measured between the back edge of the drawer box and the front edge of the cabinet back. However, one set of cabinets has a gap of almost 4.5" measured the same way. Is that normal? This gap makes the drawers very shallow.

All cabinets have backs - none are open to the wall behind them.

Our shops do not indicate drawer depth on any cabinet. However, I feel like I need to have something concrete to tell the cabinet shop before asking them to redo the drawer boxes to be consistent with their other work.
