Crossing Thanksgiving and Christmas Cacti II
Comments (6)Not fruit in the edible sense, just in that there will be seeds inside a fleshy outer covering if pollination occurs. Crossing means manually pollinating by putting the pollen from one plant on the pistil of another plant, to attempt to cause pollination to happen (performing the work that bees, moths, or hummingbirds would do in nature.) One must have multiple plants to try to do this for this particular kind of plant (meaning both Christmas & TG cacti) because they are self-sterile. TG, when I get blooms open on enough different plants, I'll see if I can make anything happen. Thanks for the inspiration, never tried before. Comments (61)Photos taken today. Should be in full bloom at Thanksgiving time. I think this might be Schlumbergera russelliana, but I'm not sure. After checking the blogs on TC, XC and EC, it appears this is related to the TC. But there is some difference from the TC. For this one, the edge of the leaf is pointed, but not very pointed like a typical TC. Also it is missing the front two teeth. But this is not a XC either since the edge of the leaf is pointed, not scallop shaped. Comments (6)Mine started budding early last week. They bloom every year for me: summers outdoors on a balcony with filtered Western sun, fertilizer and leaving outside until almost first frost. Once the buds fatten up a little bit, I bring indoors. I don't wait until they are fully formed b/c I don't want to risk them blasting from the temp. change. So, I try to bring them in when the temps. both outside and in are the closet(usually during the daylight hours) to reduce shock. Can't wait to post pics when they bloom! Happy Growing.......See MoreThanksgiving cacti starting to bud 2012
Comments (2)Yes, they have been around for several years and different varieties are available. Mine isn't a buttery yellow like a daffodil, but it is mostly yellow. Contrasts nicely with the purple stamens and pistil....See MoreRelated Professionals
