A lot can depend on how big the skylight you choose is in relation to the room. Also, where you place the skylight. Putting the skylight in the middle of the ceiling will give you general illumination. On the other hand, if you locate the skylight immediately adjacent to a wall, it can dramatically highlight some feature on the wall, such as a doorway, an artwork, or simply light up the dark end of a room. So many people think only in terms of a skylight in the middle of a ceiling. It doesn't have to be. Think about where you want illumination for dramatic effect, or to light up a work area or some special feature. An appropriately sized skylight, strategically placed, can be a real asset in a room, regardless of the room size. See images 4 and 5 in the link below for two good examples. I hope you get some other maybe favorable comments on the pendants. I dislike the location of them competing with beautiful cabinetry for attention. I think pendants look nice over counter tops and islands but not in front of cabinets. It looks cluttered when too close. If you had to measure to make sure the doors open then they are visually too close. Properly selected and installed recessed does not have to yell modern. Minimally done and well concealed recessed are intended to be stealthy and not call attention to themselves. See Cooper Lighting Iris for an example. They have plaster in frames for the absolute minimum no trim lip look. RSA has something along those lines, too. I'm suggesting low voltage because you can now get 35 watt Philips IRC MR16 lamps for 35 watt transformers which are similar to 50 watt MR16 in output to keep wattage down for Title 24 help. There are several American companies that will put 35 watt labels in their LV fixtures now and change the thermal sensor to help us with Title 24. I recommend pendants over island, over cabinet T8 or T5HO fluorescent, under cabinet T5HE fluorescent or xenon, LV recessed to wash front of uppers, and a small fixture up high in the skylight, or cove light so it isn't a black hole at night. To get past Title 24 you'll need more fluorescent than your have listed. It is 50% by wattage. Some are using dimmable T5HO dual lamps on top of the cabinets just to get some more watts up there without knocking themselves down with the resulting light.

My opinion: I think I have to agree with the GC when it comes to putting a skylight at the juncture of the two ceilings. I've had skylights in previous homes and have one in a MBR nook in my current house. I enjoy it on gloomy days and it is nice to have light without burning electricity, but there are days I wish I could close it off and not have so much light coming in. I'd suggest just hanging 2-3 pendants over the peninsula and putting the smaller skylight in the kitchen. Me.......I'd use recessed lights in the kitchen instead of the skylight so I could have control of the amount of light.

If you were to use a curb mounted type of skylite from say Insuladome on Long Island you could use a 30" width. I do not sell skylites any longer but when i did i most always preferred and had better luck selling the curb mounted type as opposed to the Roof Window style like a Velux.And that really became an issue with me when HD started selling them cheaper than I could buy them from Velux themselves(Velux does also make a Curb Mounted unit since they purchased Thermo-Vu) but i still would not buy them from a box store
