Went into the landfill that is my sons' bedroom
Comments (5)Having had 4 sons, and one still at home, I can sympathise. I don't fight it like I used to. The other 3 grew up, married and have well kept homes and fussy wives, so I figure I won't drive myself up the wall with no. 4. However...... sometimes it does just get too much, and I don't need a slum room in my home. What we are planning for him as a birthday treat is to do a surpise room make over for him when he's at work. His brothers, SIL's and DH and me.... Someone will video it like a TV show, and we'll have delegated jobs, like "cleaner", "clothing and laundry", "decorator" etc. His girlfriend will be on hand too, so she can handle anything personal like his desk and love notes etc.. we don't want to invade his privacy, but he won't mind her cleaning up his personal paperwork because most of it is from her anyway. Well, we hope to turn an awful job into a few hours of family hysteria and fun, then give him the video of the whole process as part of the gift. We even have DH on hand as the "hardware" expert to put up cork board and do repairs etc....See MoreBedroom Mini Make-over Complete (pics)
Comments (30)I think the addition of the stripe might not be approved by DS. I think it might take it that one step beyond looking pulled together and looking "decorated". But I will let him choose when he returns next week. He hasn't seen the room finished. Even though he chose the individual elements and has seen the room painted, he hasn't seen everything in the room. I offered photos but he wants to be surprised. That's why I haven't ironed the duvet yet, just in case he hates it in person. I went to the fabric store today to pick up some options. I found a gray linen that is very close to the background color of the drapes and would work the best if I added stripes. I also picked up a heavy matelasse type of fabric per a couple suggestions above. This one is the wall color and has a little circle theme. Yeah I know....i'm supposed to be moving away from that but I think it could be a contender as it's rather subtle. I picked up one other that I'm not sure how to explain but I don't really like. I also purchased a 1/2 yard of charcoal silk to use to make cording for the pillows and decided to see how that would work so I'm attaching photos for your thoughts. charcoal silk...I like the contrast with everything else and since I am using it to edge the throw pillows made out of the circle fabric, it would tie in. Unfortunately, they are rather stingy with their samples and have a minimum 1/2 yard purchase requirement... I couldn't find anything heavy except the circle fabric. The linen is rather "stiff" though and would hold a box pleat really well....See MoreOT: 4 bedrooms, or 3 bedrooms + rec room?
Comments (48)Gardenwebber, that is SUCH a good point about "entertaining in their rooms". Here's a thought about your floorplan: have the kids take the back two bedrooms. Move your son to the smaller bedroom, the girls in the room with the closet. Take that wall that you guys put up and turn it into the bunk beds in separate rooms. This will give you a lot more useable floor space. Swing your youngest daughter's bed against the far wall and you will maximize the floor space there. Your son can have the lower bunk bed in his own room next door. That leaves the bedroom directly across from yours as a playroom. That also makes your own bedroom further away from the kids beds. The bunk beds are just drywalled with the mattress only on them. We have always had a rule that our kids cannot have a computer, video games or tv in their bedroom until they are 18. I do not want that stuff cluttering my downstairs living room. An upstairs space for this is the best solution. We built our current home knowing that we were going to have teens in them someday and to give them space separate from ours. Think about this solution. My husband would be happy to talk you and your husband thru the details if it is something you would be interested in. P.S. my 17y.o.'s boyfriend is coming for christmas for 17 days and there is no way in hell that she will be "entertaining" him in her bedroom!!!!!!!!!!!! Comments (7)I would think some big swaths of dark gray- like duvet cover- with a strong accent color might work. If it were my son, I would be steering him toward combining gray with a touch of burgundy and copious amounts of fresh white- like the sheets and pillows. A black and white rug- the flatware kind with rectangles of black and white. A small burgundy needlepoint pillow with his initial in black for dressing the bed. I wonder if you could have a duvet cover made with a gray paisley? Do you have anything to work with? Black & White photography maybe? Why does he want this dark color scheme- if you can figure out what he is after in general, maybe it will be easier to find other things that achieve his goal. When I put together a room, I start with a textile- in this case it would be the fabric for the duvet cover, the coordinate window treatments, paint, rugs, etc....See MoreMega Builders
