Comments (9)when dealing with anything with OTHER THAN GREEN leaves... the fallback is always.. afternoon shade .. and if they would simply say it this way.. it would be so much easier to understand: leaves other than green require shade.. because they sunburn ... so the pf lotion to not sunburn.. is to get them shade in the afternoon.. this is also complicated by not being able to pump enough water in the high heat of the day making them sunburn faster .. and shade helps water movement within the plant ... and water management in the soil ... make sense??? and the high heat of the day.. is when the heat is high.. not necessarily noon ... [of course you are TX.. its probably blistering at dawn.. lol] .... ken...See MoreWhen/how to Shift Key Lime From Full Sun Inside to Full Sun Outside
Comments (11)Most of my citrus get only about 4 to 6 hours of sun in summer. I don't usually have them in full all-day sun. They seem to grow better in pots for me this way. For my situation the pots would overheat too much in all-day full sun. And I've never had a problem with blooming and fruit production. Usually they start blooming before I even set them out. I start them out in shade in spring and gradually -- over a period of 3 weeks -- move them to more sun. I do this because usually they have a lot of tender new growth before I even set them out. Actually toward September/October I do move them to as sunny and protected spot as possible because I want to make the most of the shorter and cooler days. Also want fruit to ripen....See MoreHelp Finding Redbud- Ruby Falls or Rising Sun (SE WI Z5)
Comments (18)My Rising Sun when planted in July'13 is below. Was 2.5' tall. Photo from Sep'16 below. About 5' tall. It was heavily mauled by deer down to one little branch in '14. Still a bit lopsided. In addition, I moved it once and it thrived through two legit Z5 winters, so this guy has shown nice toughness/vigor. Would probably be 7' without the deer damage. I don't have a photo that does it justice, but the color is impressive throughout most of the summer - lots of repeat flushes. I remember now looking at the Ruby Falls when shopping for a small weeper two years ago, but I got nervous about the Forest Pansy parentage, as Forest Pansy is not truly Z5 hardy. They sell FP here, but I don't think they thrive with the cold. That's why I went with the Pink Heartbreaker - similar form but green leaved....See More'Rising Sun' Redbud in FL questions
Comments (4)I have Rising Suns in shade, in part sun, and in mostly sun and the one in mostly sun definitely droops when hot and dry. I know they write "Full sun" on the label but IMO that is marketing and Cercis remain fully in the "understory" category. I have a Forest Pansy that insists on sagging every afternoon- it's in full sun and if I could do it over I'd move it but it's far too large now. Now that said, the one in mostly sun definitely has the best color on new growth. So I see it as a balancing act between enough light to give you good color but enough shade that you don't have to water it every afternoon- Cercis don't always appreciate wet feet. I lived in zone 10b for decades so I understand your sun, and it is quite punishing. I think in this case I would move the tree while it is still small enough to do so easily. There are too many front yard type showstopper trees available to you that it's a shame to force this one to suffer less than ideal conditions. I'm a soft heart, lol....See Morehairmetal4ever
