Need Advice/help decorating 1960 Brick Ranch home
Comments (24)Ok - I'm back, and hoping to pick your brains once again... While at a thrift store this week I stumbled across a sofa for $75 and am seriously thinking of getting it for our new home. I have it on hold now, but am wanting some opinions as to whether you think it is a style that would look well in our new living room (and what is this style of sofa actually called, BTW?), and if so, what type of chairs, rug and draperies would best go with it? My brother is inheriting almost all of my Mom's living room furniture, so, other than a vintage Indian brass coffee table of hers, I will pretty much have a blank palette to start with in that area. The sofa is in almost pristine condition - just a little piping trim on the lower part coming loose, which I'm sure can be re-glued, and a very, very slight fading on the upper rear part of the back cushions, where the sun reached. I am assuming the good condition of the sofa is due to the fact that it apparently had a slipcover on it at some point - which also is in awesome condition and was included in the price of the sofa. The sofa is a greenish-yellow pattern. Here are a couple of pics of the sofa (please excuse the photo quality and that lump of fabric piled on the sofa, which actually is the extra slipcover.) And although this isn't the actual coffee table I might pair with it, it is practically identical: This post was edited by dianelu on Sat, Jun 29, 13 at 23:33...See MoreUpdate - Boring Brick Ranch Advice
Comments (10)The house is mostly brick and what you a re looking at is the before. We have since removed the railings, added bronze lighting and replaced the door with a dark brown door, we widened the walkway and massively landscaped. Photo #2, 3 and 4 is a better idea of todayt’s look. I want to replace the white siding with a better color and would like to consider either a wood composite or a color of siding that will help modernize our little rambler....See MoreUgly Brick Ranch with small yard needs dimension and help!
Comments (19)You need shutters and pretty landscaping. The home down the street did a nice job of dressing the home and adding appeal. I don't know how long you intend on staying in the house, but based on the neighborhood, I would be cautious with renovation dollars if this is not your forever home. Think about the cost of every renovation and measure the cost against how much joy it will add while you are living in the home or how much that same money will add to your budget for your next home. You won't get back the same dollars you spend when you sell your home. Sales price determined by the sales price of homes in your neighborhood with similar square footage and number of bedrooms. There is some added dollars for updates, but not near what you spend. On average you will recoup 50 cents on the dollar and less if it is nicer than the other homes in the neighborhood (over improved for the neighborhood). The remainder is a gift to the new owner. The shed is over sized for the yard, but you will need some type of shed for lawn and garden equipment. It looks like it is in good shape. I would see how much I could sell it for and then see how much a new smaller shed will cost and see if you can get something for close to the amount you can sell the old one for....See MoreHelp updating pink brick 60s ranch home
Comments (23)You don’t have a mid-century modern ranch, you have a mid-century ranch but the hip roof and shutters plus the taller roof-line give it away as a French style mid-century ranch. Basically it was a kitsch mid-century ranch style that took styling queues from French provincial. Yours is a very toned down version of this, lacking some of the more ornate stone and arch details you would somtimes see on this style of ranch, but the shutters, multi-lite tall windows, and brick are all halmarks of this style. https://west-south.com/ranch-house-style-curb-appeal/#french I also agree don’t paint the brick, but ALSO don’t get rid of your windows or shutters. Your house is the architectural style it is, you can’t hide it. The problem is the color of the shutters and trim. The stark white trim and black shutters is in fact in line with a traditional french country brick house, but it isn’t for everyone. I’d look into a softer white or cream trim and a less harsh shutter color that still contrasts with the brick but isn’t as hard as the solid black. Also yes: landscaping would help immensely....See MoreEmily Sprague
