Concrete foundation exposed; how to repair / waterproof?

We are in the middle of a landscaping project and concrete foundation is now exposed while grading , drainage, and new concrete landing and patio are laid out. We have owned this house for 2 years, and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. We've had heavy rains for the past 2 winters and have a crawl space under the house. So far, we have not seen any signs of water intrusion in the crawl space. Now that the concrete foundation is exposed, it seems prudent to repair the areas where concrete is missing and apply some type of waterproofing membrane on the vertical surface that extends on the horizontal (flat) surface that is the ground, before it is covered by dirt or hardscape. We are using a landscaping contractor who can likely come up with his own solution. Before we agree to his, I want to better understand my options and how best to protect my foundation. Thanks for your advice.
