Hope I can jump in. I'm also in the market and have three requirements: the entire grill needs to be able to hold up to salt air near the coast, it needs to have infrared main burners as an option, and it needs to be made in in America (when spending this kind of money it sure better be supporting American jobs). Fire Magic is made in the US and has a good warranty but was not readily apparent if it offers IR. Lynx covers the first two but their website does not list where they are made. FB announced a CA factory 23 hours ago. I just messaged them on FB and they confirmed all of their grills are made in the USA - and that they now need to update their website. So aside from Lynx, does anyone have additional suggestions for rust adverse, IR, and US made? Thanks.

I would have to recommend a Holland grill. I work for a company who is an authorized dealer for Holland Co. and one day our rep. came to demonstrate the product. He cooked all kinds of steak, chicken, pork chops, bacon, biscuits, an apple pie and more. On the bigger ones the chamber is even large enough to grill an entire turkey inside. It uses a grill grid instead of a grate with a drip pan that prevents flare ups because the drippings never touches flame (guaranteed by the company). To some people this is new and they don't like it because they want their meat to have char marks on it, but it actually makes the meat allot more tender. For those who still need char marks they offer an attachable accessory that will "sear" the meat. Their grills come with a lifetime warranty on the cast iron burner too which is the most expensive part of the grill. Their expensive, but we've never had a complaint from customers.

My experience with a 'sear burner' is that it really isn't 'all that'. I watched a video of someone cooking two steaks on the same grill, one side with a sear burner, the other with it's 'normal' burner. Both steaks turned out the same. When I was searching around several years ago for a grill I saw that there are mostly 3 levels. Those from $99 to around $999, those from $1000 to around $2900, and those above that. The lower level used cheap steel, cheap valves and cheap burners, all of which would rust to death in a few years. The middle level used better components (stainless in more places, valves that actually had a low setting, stainless tube burners), but there construction was a bit less (screws instead of welds). The higher end used 304 stainless throughout, heavy stainless grill surface rods (instead of porcelain steel that will eventually crack and rust), welded seams throughout the firebox and lid. So it really depends on your budget. What I would look for: 1. stainless steel cooking grates over porcelain. Cast iron is going to rust unless you take constant care of it. There are some stainless grates that are 'non-stick', not a coating but a special way they are made. 2.alternative lighting system. Pretty much all have electric start, either by spark or by glowplugs. The alternative "emergency" lighting Ive seen uses a 'flame tube' where you hold a match over it and the flame flows down to the burner. Nice to have it the batteries or power go out. 3. Decent rotisserie system. Look for how much weight it can support and how big the burner is in relation to the whole cooktop. 4. Lights. Sometimes good to have at night but they do get sooted up over time. 5. Easy opening/accessible splatter tray. Cover with foil and cleanup is a breeze. 6. Stainless tube, stainless cast or brass burners. They should never rust out on you. 7. Some gas grills come with dividers that separate the grill sections for each burner. This allows you to cook at different temperatures on the same grill. So one section for steak, one for burgers and one for chicken. This can come in handy. BBQ grill source

Wow! The people writing to Amazon seem to be justifiably outraged. Fortunately, my 30-inch (not built-in) Lynx Pro with dual Pro-Fire burners has worked well, once sorted out. This was purchased through an appliance store in 2015. I do not use it often, since I like to thoroughly clean it each time, but it has been reliable when it needs to be. Most of the complaints on Amazon seem to be earlier than this, so maybe Lynx made some needed design or fabrication changes. On initial testing after delivery, one of the two screened burner assemblies on my grill would heat up and then develop a fuel-air leak causing it to pulsate. Lynx promptly replaced this assembly. Once I was satisfied that the burners were both working correctly and had good alignment with the gas jets, I extended the flame range per the directions in the supplied manual. This involves turning a screw in the control shaft for each burner to tune the low end of the gas flow range. Flow should be set to achieve the lowest stable flame. In comparing this to other options, such as its low priced Kenmore predecessor, one should consider that the imputed interest on the cost of the Lynx, using the real CPI (see http://www.shadowstats.com/) would allow purchase and throwout of a minimal Kenmore gas grill every few years. However, the Kenmore is relatively uncleanable, so if one likes cost-effective "crusty" cooking, he should stick with cheap grills. The all stainless steel Lynx is easy to clean (albeit time consuming) and the grill assemblies can be soaked for as long as needed to ease complete cleaning without any fear of rusting. kas
