Dishwasher NOT next to sink?
Comments (10)My dishwasher has always been at a right angle to my sink (2 different houses) and I've never even thought about it as being weird or unworkable. Last house it was a pivot, this house a pivot and a step to get to the DW from the sink. My DW doesn't require pre-rinsing anything and we usually load the it immediately upon finishing up the meal. People bring their plates to the dw instead of the sink. A rug in front of the sink takes care of any dripping prep dishes. New kitchen will have DW behind and slightly to the right of me as I stand at the sink. It will actually be closer to the sink than my 2 previous - I'm envisioning loading the dishwasher not as standing at the sink and turning completely around to load the dw, but standing in the aisle with the sink on my left side and dw on the right side. Easy-peasy loading, no twisting at all. I don't think it would cause any more traffic jams than it would if the dw was in a cabinet next to the sink. Either way, when the door is down and the racks are pulled out they will be in the aisle space between the sink and the island....See MoreLarge/medium Dbl sink; Which side next to Dishwasher?
Comments (5)Our DW is on the right. We have the large bowl on the left, and the small bowl with disposer on the right. Dirty dishes get collected in the large bowl on the left. At clean up time, they are then scraped with a rubber scraper into the (empty) small bowl w/disposer on the right and placed directly into the DW on the right. Having the disposal in the small sink keeps the disposal clear and available for putting stuff down it even if I have stacks and stacks of dishes in the large sink. This works great with our new KitchenAid DW with built in disposer! Just a quick swipe of biggest scraps into the sink disposer and plunk the dishers right in the DW...I used to have a bad habit of basically pre-washing my dishes before putting them in the DW...now I never even turn on the water....See MoreDishwasher plumbing-not next to sink
Comments (8)Are you sure this is your only option? I recommend posting your layout here (if you haven't already) and let the people here help you with the layout. It may very well be your only option, but you would be surprised at what we can come up with for challenging kitchens! Here is a link that might be useful: FAQ: How do I ask for Layout Help and what information should I include?...See MoreWhat goes next to the trash pullout?? Ewww.....
Comments (19)Many have alluded to this, but to say it explicitly: Where people have dishes or whatever by the trash, the cabinetry is all made in modular boxes. Each set of drawers or cabinet, or trash pullout, is made in its own case, which are installed by attaching them together and attaching to the wall. Therefore, you have the side walls of the case in which the trash pullout is installed and the side walls of the case for whatever is next to it, between the outside of your trash can and whatever you have stored nearby. My cabinets, though not all, also have a full shelf-type divider between the trash pullout and the drawer above it, so there isn't any interaction. Nevertheless, I mostly keep less used cleaning things in that drawer. But I don't like putting the icky trash in the cabinetry at all. I use the pullout for recycling--one bin for returnables and one for general pickup. The garbage goes in my old covered Rubbermaid pail, which can fit under the sink, but which I keep out when I have icky things to throw in it. The garbage cans are down a flight of stairs, so the kitchen pail only gets emptied a couple of times per week. We don't have a lot of garbage and it's inconvenient to take it out more often (unless it's very icky or starts to smell). You may find that you prefer to use your Simple Human can that way, but it's a good idea to put the pullout in, as it's an expected thing nowadays. Our recycling takes things like the plastic boxes from produce, so I have a lot more recycling anyway, and that's more or less clean....See Moretatts
