Japanese Maple Cultivars that will root from cuttings:
Comments (6)Theoretically, ANY cultivar of JM can be propagated by cuttings. Some have more vigor than others and will take more readily but there is no reason to assume any single cultivar would not be adaptable to this means of propagation. There is always a risk with cuttings and it's not a fast process, so not a widespread practice for commercial growers. But for home hobbyists, a fun experiment and a way to expand your collection very economically. This article by Penn State outlines the process nicely. Timing and aftercare are critical to the success. https://sites.psu.edu/jmbonaccorsi7/2016/02/29/deciduous-shrub-cutting-japanese-maple/...See MoreJapanese Maple root system question
Comments (1)Compared to their larger growing cousins, Japanese maples and their other Asian relatives have very modest and completely non-aggressive root systems. But like any tree, as they mature there will be lots of roots present under the soil surface. And these roots tend to be extremely sensitive to any disturbance - injuring them in any manner can lead to some very serious problems. I typically suggest designing and then planting the surrounding bed at the same time as you plant the tree, thereby reducing the potential for damage later on. And if you can limit your plant selection to low shrubs, groundcovers or spreading perennials that do not require division - plants that require minimal attention or cultivation once established - your maple will be very happy....See MorePaver deck in townhouse front yard and tree root system?
Comments (13)The maple roots will not cause any conflict with the pavers - they are just not aggressive enough......but the pavers or any significant disturbance in the immediate area will cause a significant disturbance to the tree!! Japanese maples have a very delicate root system and resent any kind of root disturbance while in active growth. I have seen JM's start to decline with even the mild cultivation necessary to plant within the root zone or to carry out routine but vigorous weeding. Damage to the root system is also an ideal way to introduce ever present soil pathogens like Verticillium wilt, which can take a JM down in just a matter of days. Damage to even a small portion of the roots is not worth the risk if you value the tree. Anyone that will try to convince you otherwise does not have a lot of experience with Japanese maples....See MoreJapanese maple root flare
