90s era gas fireplace broken glass and other questions

Our house was built in 1995. It has a gas fireplace that my children have officially destroyed. First, the little metal vent flaps underneath are all bent and out of place. Second, my autistic son threw a heavy wooden block at it and shattered the glass.

Now, we have never really used the thing. I once turned it on for 5 minutes and my autistic son got 2nd degree burns 20 minutes after it was turned off (I never use it when they are around but I had it on earlier in the morning). So they just aren't safe. Not to mention the fact that it actually works too well and makes the house too hot.

What should I look for in a replacement? Are there ones that don't throw off too much heat and aren't too dangerous?
