GE Harmony - Should I do it or not?
Comments (43)Had an old Kemore (13 years) washer and gas dryer. Transmission went out and wife wanted a whole new set. Thought we might buy the LG front loaders as they are really cool and everyone likes them. My wife didn't like the way you put detergent, softener, bleach in a samll pull-out tray on the LG's. Thought it was too easy to get bleach in the detergent and etc. She also thought they looked too "industrial" and did not like the laundromat look. We looked at Oasis and they were big, but many buttons on the control panel to clean around. Another salesman at Best Buy showed us how the Oasis spends considerable time spining around to balance the load. Not sure if that is really a problem but he pointed it out. So enter the Harmony. She liked the size for big comforters, the clean lines, the smooth control panel, and the convient drawer for detergent and sofener with a separate one for bleach! We found a clearance set with a gas dryer and a $100 rebate. So far (little over a month) we both like it. The washer is extremely quiet and extremely smooth in spin cycle. It is just off our kitchen over a crawl space on vinyl floors and it is quiet! Washer makes intermittant swishing and filling sounds along with a quiet "jet" sound as it spins up. Actually very entertaining to listen to. The dryer actualy makes more noise than the washer! We use Tide HE and clothes are clean. Washer cycle can take longer than the dryer cycle when you add additional rinses and presoak cycles. Dryer is usally done in 30-35 minutes. Washer usually 45 or more minutes. Countdown time on displays are nice. Communications between are trick if you don't want to pick the dryer cycle. I was concerned with reliability and GE prices for parts. The Harmony comes with 1 year total warrenty, 2 year parts, and 5 years parts on the electronic panel. That might help if you don't buy an extended warrenty. So far so good!...See MoreCabinet brands question
Comments (3)Cpartist--totally understand those points. The above brands were what was recommended and I can find little info/reviews on them. This forum has been great in highlighting pros/cons of various brands, but as the major lines that it seems most of the reviews are on were not ones that my KD carries, I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on those I listed. Comments (86)While I'm not a fan of WIC in the bathroom, I realize many people like them. That's a personal decision. However like was explained many of the things in this house don't work because they are just not good design. Here's the changes I made to the first floor to give you better flow and to put the things needed where they will work the best. 1. Since you don't use a bath, get rid of it! If you want a bath on the first floor, put it in bedroom 2. 2. Your master closet is actually now larger. However I was able to pull in the wall so it now matches the wall of the dining room. 3. Now you have a straight shot from the master suite to the bathroom to the closet. And then as an added bonus if you don't want to wake your spouse in the morning, you can now leave through the laundry closet! 4. Instead of the powder room by the master suite, I moved your laundry room there. Think of how easy it will now be to do your laundry. 5. I pulled the closet across to meet the study. Even though it makes the house a bit larger, it will actually save money because you won't have the extra bump outs. 6. Your study is the same size but by moving it down, you now have an actual hallway that creates a "spine" for the house, so you're not making a jog through your great room to get to the master suite. 7. By moving the powder room to where the laundry was, it freed up space so you now have a good sized entry from the mudroom door and the garage. No more trying to shove one another out of the way. Plus there's now more room to store all those kids things. 8. The powder room is now near the side where the kids will enter and it's convenient still to guests. 9. I moved around your layout for your kitchen too. It didn't work. Lots of space but not well used. I moved your cleanup sink to under the window with the dishwasher next to it. Lots of storage space in drawers now to the left. I moved your fridge so it's now in the work "triangle". So now you take food out of the fridge, move it to the prep sink on the island to wash, then prep to the left of the prep sink, and then carry it to the cooktop to cook. 10. In the master bath, if you're planning on a glass shower enclosure, I would probably flip the toilet closet and the shower so the toilet isn't against the master bedroom wall....See MoreKraftMaid Vanity Estimates - Reasonable?
Comments (9)One trick I've learned is that quotes will often be different on the same cabinet brand from different suppliers, so if you have another KraftMaid dealer in your vicinity even if it is a chain store with the same name but a different location, you could try seeking an alternate quote. KraftMaid cabinetry is frequently on sale at some retail establishments for around 20% off, so you could check the sales for a better price, also. Yes, I think your quote is high for what you would be getting. We're looking into the Harmoni line by Bentwood Kitchens in Texas which is excellent quality with competitive pricing. They do floating vanities if you'd be interested to check into a comparison quote. Plato Woodworking in Minnesota was another high-quality brand we considered, and both of these companies ship nationwide in the United States. You'd have even more high-quality options with manufacturers that deal in limited geographical areas if you live in the North or Northeastern United States. If your order is just one vanity, you'll do better with pricing to purchase from a local manufacturer to save on shipping costs. Finally, I'm assuming you've already checked any showrooms that specialize in vanities like those from the James Martin company. If not, you might be surprised at what you'd find there, everything from traditional to modern. We purchased a James Martin vanity this year and are satisfied with the quality....See MoreColumbus Custom Design
