Metal siding, more expensive than vinyl or Hardie?

Planning to reside our 1978 contemporary home that currently has original wood shiplap. Would like to consider metal (such as Bridgersteel) opposed to vinyl or Hardie. Everything I have read online points to it being lower in cost (and a green alternative, an important factor for us) than even vinyl but local contractor stated it's far more expensive. Also, do we seek out an experienced metal roofing contractor? There are no "metal residing" contractors that I can find in our New England area

I buy primed Hardie Plank for the same price per square foot as pre painted metal I would use on a roof. Unsure if this is the type of metal you are considering.

If your home has large uninterrupted wall surfaces, metal sheets will go up quickly. Trim details, especially around openings -- windows, doors, etc, need to be well thought out with metal siding.

You might seek a barn/metal building contractor accustomed to this type of siding.

I am in Oklahoma. We only have one dedicated metal siding provider in our area. When we priced out the siding, metal was more expensive than vinyl, but less than Hardie.

You really don't want an insurance agent that doesn't understand buildings. It's part of their job to be knowledgeable about the things that affect premiums. Even if Allstate doesn't give a discount for cement board siding, the industry in general does give one, and the agent should know that. Consider shopping your insurance needs around.

We used CertainTeed Impressions on our entire house. We get compliments on it all the time. In fact, people will go up and touch it, and then are amazed that it's not real shakes. Originally I was adamant that I did not want to use vinyl siding, but this product was so much better than anything else I looked at. I think what sets it apart from other vinyl shakes is that it appears seamless and the color is not a flat solid color. It has a bit of variation in the color like real cedar shakes, and it has some depth to the color and texture. I looked at Foundry vinyl shakes, and there was no comparison. The house is 5200 sq ft. As a comparison, the cost was $5,000 more than SmartSide. I didn't like the SmartSide because at the time they only had pastels, I thought it was way too shiny, and I didn't like all the seams. I think they've come out with many more attractive colors now. I've attached a picture of the back side of the garage. Not the best picture, but it is the best I have that shows the siding up close. I also agree with another poster that a more substantial trim around the windows makes a big difference.

Hard to tell from the small pic, but it looks lovely and interesting to me. I suspect if you are buying the home, there are going to be a lot more pressing issues to deal with than shutter color.

We replaced our cedar siding with Hardi plank. At first we only did the front of the house because we also had woodpecker damage. The corners did not match up as far as the size of the boards was concerned but you would only notice that if you were standing at the corner and looking at the front and side at the same time and knew that they were different size boards. We liked the siding so much that we did the two sides a year later. We have not done the back of the house yet. We have had the siding installed for about 4 years now and there have been no issues. The color is exactly the same as the day it was installed. It was expensive but IMO looks much better than vinyl siding

We are in a similar situation, 1976 "contemporary" with T1-11 siding that may need to be replaced. In NE. Does Hardie do well in this climate? Metal sounds pretty interesting too -- will follow and hopefully more folks will respond.

I live in Kansas City in a house with partial steel lap siding. The lower half of the front of the house is steel siding and the sides/rear are all steel siding. I do not know how old the siding is, but am sure it is more than 25 years old. It is also insulated with a 1" thick fiberglas insulation glued to the inside of the siding. The top half of the front is a plastic wood shingle siding(also insulated.

Have a garden shed sides with the same siding(without insulation). I had to paint the south sides of the garage and shed last year, since the paint was peeling. Have never had any problems, other than washing, the rest of the house.

I have built houses(volunteering for Habitat) with Hardi-plank, Hardie-panel, ICF, vinyl, and batt and board sidings.

Our house is about 2,000 sq, ft. with a full basement. I added 10" of blown cellulose insulation to the attic. Our utility bills(heating and cooling) are about 3/4's of those we paid in a 14' by 78' metal sided mobile home. That is almost twice the space.

For that reason alone, insulated siding(metal or plastic) makes long term sense, since the payback can be made in just utilities alone.

Add in the almost lack of maintenance and it is a no brainer. I can weed eat, hit the siding and no damage---not so with vinyl or Hardi materials.

Initial cost is more. Payback can be relatively quick.
