Crown root gall?

This is an own root Belinda's Dream. It is still in it's Nursery pot. Is this crown root gall? If it is, can I still use the cuttings to try to start new plants or will they be infected as well?

It doesn't have that dry, gnarly, deeply fissured and cracked, dark brown colored protruding surface that the crown gall I have seen does. I have not seen early stage crown gall only advanced cases. This could be early stage crown gall.

I say it is a chubby crown, normal growth. I could be wrong, though.

Wait for other forum members to advise you further.

Root gall is out on the roots, away from the crown area. Root galls look like walnuts attached to the roots. Coincidentally, I had them on a Belinda's Dream, about 10" out from the crown on bell wire thin roots. They were ping pong ball size.

This is a guess only because I don't know either. To me it doesn't have that galled lumpy look growing on the wood. It looks more like the wood itself grew that way. I like Moses hope that someone else chimes in who knows more about gall.

I've got galls by the hundreds mostly on Citation rootstock. Have for many years. So far it has had no effect on the trees or crop that I can tell. I am moving to other roots and replanting in the same places. There isn't much else I can do since it's in my greenhouse. I'm not too worried since the fruit continues to be great.

I can't speak to 20+ year old roses, but based on my experience with a 10 year old rose, the canes of which had become very woody and old looking, I'd say cut back a couple of the oldest looking canes close to the ground in the spring AND spread alfalfa (pellets, meal, or tea) around the base generously. Alfalfa helps stimulate new growth. That will hopefully produce lots of new growth. The next year, cut back a couple more of the old canes and add alfalfa. Third year, do the same. By that time you may have a brand new bush. My 10 year old rose had become very woody but I was timid about cutting it to the ground. Well, nature made the decision for me. After a great wind storm, a LARGE branch from my neighbor's oak tree came flying over and landed right on top of my rose. By the time I got the oak branch cut up enough to move it, all that was left of the rose was a bunch of broken branches. So I had no choice but to cut almost all the canes to the ground. I added alfalfa and regular food and water, and a month later all sorts of new canes were growing. Completely rejuvenated that bush. Hopefully, you can do something like that to your bushes, but maybe spread it out over a couple years. Good luck. Kate

I grow Nicotiana, flowering tobacco, of many varieties all over the place here and have never seen galls on any. (By the way, if you teach plant biology and want a surefire, fast-acting pollen for pollen-germination exercises, Nicotiana never fails.) The bacteria is around, however, and I have had maybe three roses infected over 13 years here, two of which I discarded. The big (and I mean "big" in every sense of the word) is my 'Mrs. B.R. Cant', which started showing symptoms of crown gall (or something very like it!) about 8 years ago or so -- a big, crusty swelling at the base and then various "tumors" along the canes. My heart sank. I kept meaning to take her out, but delayed and delayed because she occupies a large amount of real estate (being 8' tall and more than 14' wide now) in a prominent position on a hillside, which I would then have to re-do (sigh), plus I absolutely love her. And, anyway, she has never seemed to suffer any decline in growth, bloom, or overall appearance during all this time (which I keep waiting for, but it hasn't happened yet), so there she stays, the exception to the "rule".

I'm no expert but certainly looks like it! Regardless, tree roots are not supposed to look like that! I would send it back ASAP. Coming from Stark Bros, I'm surprised they let that go. But then again, they just shipped me a Pecan tree that already has pecan scab and just told me to spray it.

I had a lump I noticed on the surface of the crown of rose "Alice Garnier" late winter 2016. I was sorry to see it and worried the plant was doomed, even though the plant looked OK otherwise. Well, later this summer this "lump" just crumbled off and the plant looks fine. The two photos are the same day. The plant has grown now and seems normal. ?????

We planted 3 dozen Drift Roses that, unknown to us, were infected by gall in the nursery. We removed the galls as soon as we spotted them, still we lost about half the bushes.

The good thing for you, that doesn't look like rose gall.

Shella - Be watchful that is what crown gall can do. It will reach a point where it cracks then will dry up and fall off. It will then begin to regrow. So if your plant should start to look poorly take another good look at it.

At the arboretum we lost most of the original OGR's to crown gall; many reverted to their rootstocks. We took the precaution of changing out the soil when we replanted-- a huge job-- but we haven't lost a rose since.

Despite keeping two complete sets of tools, I have lost several roses at home due to crown gall. I believe it's a coincidence. Will never know for sure!

Yes, unlike the one first asked about Sheila's plant definitely looks galled - if it were mine I would get rid of it.

I checked today. Looked normal, without galls/tumors. ?????? I'm leaving it and will watch closely.
