Are these Elm Beetle tracks in my Dead Elm?

last modified: 7 years ago

I pulled off some bark and saw these tracks. Would this have been cause of death or one factor? A Sapsucker had been at the tree for a few seasons. I have another Elm beside it that gave up the ghost this year. The pics are from an Elm that died three years ago. The most recent goner doesn't seem to have Sapsucker holes in it I can see. The thing is I want to replace these trees with resistant varieties of Elm, but am unsure if I should if the soil is diseased. What is the Vector -- does the soil have to be infected and the beetles arrive to transport it, or do they bring disease with them? Also green worms were at the leaves for a couple seasons. Don't know what they were. An ash tree between the Elm also died a few years ago too, so I have tree skeletons on the south side now which were the shade providers to the yard.

What a pain.
