As with most of us, it appears you are trying to use or display a lot of items you have collected over time. Space planning and scale of pieces should dictate the floor plan for your furnishings, then the use of décor items can be placed appropriately. You have a lovely home, nice furniture....and you really need a designer to help you make the best use of all of it. Adding a rug won't really help.

I had a rug and the rug looked very busy with the bold accent chair so I removed it.

you do need a rug and a coffee table. once you get that large dresser out of there, it will lighten the space. Try consoles along these lines for under the tv,

A rug like the one above, or this one below, along with either of the coffee tables, will work. I agree about smaller side tables. those are a little too heavy

take your wood art next to the tv and put that over the fireplace by itself. put the mirror and baskets elsewhere.

take away one of those tables next to the sofa and replace w/a plant similar to the one in the picture above, next to the white sofa

If you are serious about straight lines, and the wood piece on the wall, then you might need transitional - would this work then over fireplace? simple enough to let the fp have its 'showing'....

I can't remove the bead board. My house was built in 1890 and most of it is original. I painted it close to the wall color so it will help blend it in.

I actually don't like the TV stand, too fancy. I don't like the curved lines.

Havingfun I love the 2nd and 3rd rooms, beautiful. This room doesn't get much light so I don't want to go with a really dark rug.

What about navy jute rug? it has straight lines, and you might say it goes with a lot to make more casual.

I really like the navy jute rug but it may make the room too dark. I live in an old neighborhood where all the houses are close together and not much light gets thru the windows.

I'm a big fan of carpet remnants - especially a nice wool berber. Carpet stores will bind them for you & they charge less per square yard than area rugs (and they will cut it to a custom size for the seating area). You can get a lovely neutral or tweedy wool that will add texture and underfoot warmth, but not busy pattern.

I might think that a light navy jute is more lively than regular jute, and beige.... maybe it would be dark....
