I'm in Texas too and summer is just gearing up, with temps in the mid to upper nineties during the day and barely getting below 80 at nighttime. I have one hybrid tea that's a year old (I think it is Chicago Peace) and two baby Austins, Evelyn and Abrahan Darby. Evelyn is in the ground and Abe is in a pot, waiting for me to get his bed ready. The HT is suffering badly in the heat. I have to water it at least twice a week and make sure the mulch is piled thick around its base. Its last blooms are bedraggled, crisp, and totally bleached. Evelyn, on the other hand, had been sitting in her new spot for about 2 months doing nothing visible. But once the temps starting hitting 90, she exploded in new growth and has even put out three buds in the last couple weeks. She doesn't get as much sun as I expected her to - I planted her near a tall crape myrtle and forgot how leafy they get - so perhaps she welcomes the break from the scorching temperatures. Abraham isn't doing much, and that's ok - he's still getting used to his new pot. But since he's so similar to Evelyn, I expect that he'll do just fine this summer.

I hadn't considered tissue culture as a reason. On the other hand, think about the climate in Costa Rica, and the fact that many of these early daylilies multiply like rabbits. I have three or four older daylilies which were acquired in pots from Lowes and other such places. I moved them to a different place last June and somewhat ruthlessly divided them in the process. Result: fantastic increase. Rather than get rid of them altogether, I plan to move them to a fringe area where they can make a nice little display en masse until such time as I can afford to replace them with something newer and better. So many daylilies, so little cash. Sigh.

I don't think that was it ,evelyn. These were made from upside down wire baskets with a bunch of strands of doo dads & mirrors hanging down . I can drag mine out & Take a pic if you'd like.

I see you live in New Jersey.....close enough to drive down to Farmville, Virginia to visit the amazing Green Front Furniture. It's a furniture/Oriental carpet/accessories store that consists of 9 old tobacco warehouse converted into an amazing furniture experience. They carry high and mid grades of furniture, including Hickory Chair and Century, at discounted prices. They carry thousands of hand-knotted Oriental carpets from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other locations .. "the equivalent of 5 football fields of Oriental carpets". It's definitely worth a drive down...there are B&Bs or local lodging and some nice restaurants for a weekend. I especially recommend Charley's Waterfront Cafe actually located at Green Front -- excellent food, good wine list and a great way to relax and unwinde after a fabulous day of shopping.
